Proper way to say Marans?

I guess what I want to know is --do Americans pronounce the name of the chicken properly, or is there an americanized version....I've been calling her a millie just to avoid the whole question...

Probably not, anyone who can't read french would just put their own idea into it. I looked up the pronunciation when I got mine, because I wasn't sure it was even french (it is, it's not flemish). I'd just say it how you like and don't burst out laughing if somebody else comes out with something weird and wonderful. (that video is correct, you just stick the d sound in front)

As for marans, in french it's sort of mah-roh, but I've also got one of those and I just say it like mar-in, I don't turn into inspector clouseau.

One of my pet peeves lol. I hate when people post a pic of one asking what breed it is and they get a million responses of "millie" or "mille fluer". Now not only do they still not know the breed or that they come in other colors but people seem to think that's the only bird in that color!

Exactly, so how d'Uccle fanciers pronounce it? I did ask on a D'Uccle thread and got more than one answer...such as dew-clay with a definite 2nd syllable.
I do want to get more of them, and in different colors....

It would only be "lay" on the end if there was an accent above the final "e". The thing is, you'll always get differences when people are wrestling with words from a foreign language. Don't stress about it.

Here is a sample of D'Uccle pronunciations from various BYC threads, I like the last one the best about the bird being too pretty to sound like 'a big wad of phlegm':

De-Uckle. I hope you know how to pronounce that. It is like uncle without the c in uncle.

Well, Im not really sure, but I say Dee'OOcle
Someone (I dont remember who) told me it way pronounced Day'OOClay

It pronounces it kind of like Doo-you-clay...

When I asked a judge at a show about my d'Uccle's, that I pronounced "do clay" he stared at me and asked "what". It seems here in the south they do pronounce it DEE UUkel. I think the emphasis here is all wrong. the "d' is soft and the accent should be on the Uccle. I have checked Websters talking dictionary and they give two pronouncations
"duk el" and " do cla" ( soft A ) I think if you are going to discuss the breed you will most likely have someone understand what you are talking about by using the duk el version.

Dew-cluh or dew-clay. The majority of people will not know what you're talking about unless you say duckle or dee-uckle, unfortunately.'.

Ideal poultry pronouces it "Dee Uncles" I thought it was "Doo Clay" but was told that is incorrect too. I thought it was French?

So...some of you show people, how do you pronounce it???

i will try to pronounce it like i hear it from breeders thou i might not translate it correctly......da ooocle..or du uucle...cle is sle du uuusle long u.
if i remeber right the belgium would say du clay
Wickpedia says du clay, origionating from the town of uccle..

This is confusing. I always pronounce it "de-uh-cull" I must sound like an idiot.

Once you in the US you can pronounce it however you would like. ...
I prefer the french way as the bird is so pretty to have a name that sounds like a big wad of phlegm

Guys my mother tongue is Italian, so if you have troubles with Italian chickens or with poultry breeds pronunciation, I am here for you! For example Ancona is An+ko+nuh, easy and simple

Most Americans I have been around pronounce the "s". The French do not. It's like a lot of Americanized words of foreign origin. Both are acceptable. Personally, I drop the "s", but my American tongue doesn't roll too well
