I sometimes dislike how we "Americanize" words. It's almost like we feel silly actually pronouncing it the way it is pronounced in the country of origin.....but more then likely it's because we CAN'T pronounce it because we refuse to learn more then one language. Huge disservice to our children and nation. I LOVE to hear how others pronounce words and when you have lived in other countries you realize how boring our language actually is....although the south is pretty funny (where I'm from) and people from Jersey and Louisiana crack me up! I've actually seen some shows where they had to put subtitles in for the Cajun language. Love it. I'm a fan of foreign films. The cinematography is so different and how they see the world through their culture is eye opening. Okay rant (sort of) over. Funny thing I was just looking up Millefleur (how to pronounce) today and then stumbled on ya'lls posts. Didn't even know about Marans. Love, love how the French pronounce it. Now have to go listen to D'uccle!

Or foods...I had a friend from The Netherlands when I was a teen. She teased me about the way we say gouda cheese, as goo-da. She pronounced it kind of like howda with a throaty sound in front. Next trip to deli I asked for it using the proper Dutch pronunciation, and they had no idea what I was asking for. It's just the way it is. Go with the flow. etc.

True. After all, it's about communication. Saying it "correctly" and not being understood doesn't get you anywhere.

Oh, I'm in agreement with both of you. If you don't say it where people can understand it then you're not goin to get what you want. Just sayin how I love the true pronunciations....and I'm sure I totally slaughter them, lol. When I'm in another country I get laughed at for sayin things the way I say it...but then again I've slaughtered the English language sometimes.
