Protecting Hens from Japan Fallout!

I see some of you had a laugh at my expense. That is OK because I know everyone has different levels of concern. My chickens are important to me and I feel that I'm responsible for their health and happiness. (no matter how silly it makes me look) Anyway, if anyone cares about what I think about protecting chickens, this is what I'm doing. I'm upping their calcium by offering more eggshells, giving them more beta carotene by giving them cooked carrots. I'm also mixing some Berry Green with probiotics and mixing it with some milk for them too. There are reasons for each of these steps but I won't go into it now due to lack of interest. Take care all.

Swearnsue I'm not making fun of you. People make themselves vulnerable to attack when they reveal - their fears- this should be a safe place for chickeners to vent. Sometimes people cover up anxieties they have themselves by making jokes about the situation - I don't think they intend to be mean either - it justs comes out that way. We all handle stress differently. Remember that program "MASH" from tv. They made jokes to keep from losing their minds - laughed to keep from crying.

Try not to be afraid ,.. I think it may be too early to start any efforts for that,.

You need to do what you feel is best. There is nothing wrong with improving on the diet of you and your hens.

I would only urge caution with increasing supplements, vitamins and minerals as too much of certain ones can be harmful. I would also urge caution on any supplements you may be taking as well - again - too much can be harmful.

I think we all are concerned with what is going on in Japan, just some more than others - and everyone deals with things in their own way. Some use humor - some use negativity - some have anxiety .... So I don't necessarily think it's having a laugh at your expense - just having a laugh with the situation at hand.

I agree that the government isn't going to tell the whole truth on the matter out of fear of creating a panic. No different than when we don't tell our kids the whole truth - so they don't worry unnecessarily about some things. But I also don't think it's reached a point of being a public health concern in the US. I do think it's a health concern in Japan though. And I would NOT be sitting around staying in my house trying to make it airtight to avoid contamination - I'd be moving to the other side of the island.

I have a very small chicken who is now running around the yard screaming "THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING." What should I do?
(B.T.W. The distance from her coop to the Japanese reactors is 11,070 kilometers or 6,879 miles or 5,977 nautical miles)

Any help would be appreacated:)

We're not laughing at you, just making light of things because it's good to keep a sense of humor about the world.

Everyone has different ways of looking at things after all.

My chickens are very important to me, too. I have had some of them for almost fourteen years now. It sounds like you're taking excellent care of your birds and that they are lucky to have you.

Check out what unprocessed foods (and diets) are recommended for people undergoing radiation treatment for cancer. Cancer patients get 1000s of times more radiation than we would get from Japan right now.

That's what I'm doing... increasing fresh, raw and unprocessed foods in my diet and my chickens' diet, and dropping the processed foods. It can't hurt us, it just supports our bodies regardless of what happens.

swearnsue, please don't think that we are making fun of you or at your expense. I too don't feel that the government is going to be fully truthful in any situation. I just refuse to jump at every little thing that could worry me. I am tired of the news folks making mountains out of molehills just to make ratings. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT saying that it is a small situation going on in Japan at all and I feel very sorry for the tragedies that are unfolding there. I am just thinking back to government reports, scientific reports or news reports that get everyone all upset and wound up about something (say like the infant vaccination scare that has caused so many other problems) that turn out to be wrong over time. I think if we keep tending to ourselves and our animals in the same fashion that has kept them and us healthy so far is going to keep working the same. Remember this is the same government that recommended duct tape and plastic sheeting for your house windows and vents to protect you from a possible terrorist attack after 9/11. I think what most of the people who have posted, myself included, have been trying to convey is that to calm down a little, breathe a few deep breaths and go on with living. We do care about you and your chickens.

Chernobyl had absolutely no effect on the US and after that fall out there was only minute traces of iodine in the milk they tested in NY after that fall out... So really even if all 4 reactors have fall out the only ones that will really be in danger will be the ones in Japan and nearby countries... If some gets into the ocean it will be dissipated before ever reaching us soil... And same with any clouds of radiation getting into the atmosphere... It will all disperse out and will not be lethal in any way to anyone or any live stock in the US.... We are just to far away....
