I am ner here, and i am also new to taising chickens. I rescued a chick the other day that was wandering all alone in a construction zone where my husband works. I have always wanted chickens, but what better way to start than to happen upon one who was obviosly lost or abandoned. My question is, can you tell if this is a pullet or a cockerel? We believe it to be a barred rock, but i dont know my breed of chickens. My guess is its a pullet, with the dark color, dark wash on legs, and the comb.. however it looks pink and not yellow like i see on other threads hear. I read that the pink is does not necessarily mean cockerel, and that it could be because its hot (we live in phoenix). Is it still too early to tell? And am I correct on the barred rock?

While the front of the chick's head cannot be seen clearly, this chick does appear to have a wide flat comb bud which would indicate that it is not developing a single comb as a Barred Rock would have. Can you take a clear shot of the area where the comb will develop so we can see what comb type it is developing?

Its a Dominique.
I'm leery of how light it appears. Pullets tend to be darker, but I'm not putting my money either way yet. For reference, in the barred breeds, males have wider bands of light gray and tend to appear lighter then the females with their wider bands of dark.

I would get some friends for them soon as well.

The picture i posted before for some reason made it look really light/gray. Its a lot more dark. Heres a better picture for color preference

Whatever it is, it certainly is adorable! :love As someone already suggested, it really does need some chicken friends - unless you are home all day and are going to make it a house chicken! They do get desperately lonely all by themselves, poor little things, just like we would if we were all alone. And I’m sure it is missing its little chicken family it became separated from. I’m so glad you found it and are going to take care of it! Good luck and keep us posted!

I think a rooster would have more white because of the double barring gene. It's comb does look kinda red in the last pic but I see no wattles developing yet.
