#2. When does a cockerrel become a Cock.

My guess is, a pullet becomes a hen when she lays eggs?

And does a cockerrel become a cock when he starts crowing?

I need to know this by the 21 of this month to put them in.

Thank you all so much.

Well how dummmmm am I. I just went to the Learning Center above and found out:

A cockerel is a male chicken under one year old and the same thing with a pullet.

Sorry.

At our fair, and the show we are going to, Hens and cocks are birds born before the first of this year..
pullets would be born after the first of January of the year of the show..

Yes for show purposes 1 year old or January 1st, whichever is most applicable.

I mean a chick hatched in December isnt going to be considered an adult at 1 month old

Most fairs need them to be tested for pollurm (sp?). I was going to enter mine, but they did the test the week i was away.

You said you were away when they did the test. Do I need to go to a vet to get this done. I was also told I need to get a Avian flu test? I wish these people would call me back. I only have until next week to get them in. Thanks for your help.

call 4H people in your area and there will be someone that is certified to do it, it doesnt cost much at all.

Give them electrolytes in their water a day or two before and after the fair and they should be fine. No shots.

Make sure they dont have lice or mites. When you get home I would probably treat for lice, for they may have picked some up at the fair. There is always the chance a chicken can catch something at the fair where all the other chickens are.

I didn't think about the 4H people. I know someone in it I'll call them. Thanks for all your help.

I don't think I will have the time to put them in this year. Maybe next year.
