I dont understand why not because she is with a roo 24/7. I got another egg from her yesterday, that makes 3 thus far. I noted that her third egg was very very different in that it is pourous. the first 2 were not. do I need to give her anything other than laying feed? It is sorta hard to be away from my animals (especially the pups) but it is only 5 hours a day and for now just 2 days a week.

PS I guess we had more bad weather last night and I slept thru it all YAY!!! over 70 touchdowns last night sedalia has a lot of damage but ZERO deaths!!! big yay!!!! on my way home a bit ago from taking hubby to work i saw a beautiful blue patch in the sky amongst the big droopy gray storm clouds. that warmed my soul!

Donna, you will have to check with Lisa on the pourous egg. I believe you can offer crushed oyster shells free choice for them to eat and build up their calcium levels and that may help with the shell. I am so glad you are okay! What sort of job did you start? I haven't worked either for over 15 years and the idea of going back is totally scary!

Have a great day and enjoy all those new eggs you are getting! Sorry about the pullet egg not being fertile. I think that happens a lot with the first few eggs. I am sure that is why folks advertise their eggs as pullet eggs . . . I could be wrong though? I'm sure Lisa will know and she can chime in!

Has anyone else candled again? Let us know how the incubation is going!

Hope everyones eggs are veining, i see the eye now in some. I ran across this beautiful video made by a minister about a silkie. such an awesome story. get the kleenex out though hugs Donna

I pulled 2 infetiles, and one blood ring. I am getting better at candling now. My 1st egg was infertile. I poked holes and blew it out. I them injected a sani solution and blew it again. i am saving that first egg, though i dont know just what i will do with it

Running behind on candling this group. Goofy Muscovy duck-girl keeps pulling the eggs out from under the broody JG to her 'make-believe' nest. I brought one inside that had a huge crack, but the membrane was intact. It was developing, so I glued and taped the crack and stuck it in the incubator.
Yikes! What was clear and what was BR?
Holler if you are near the phone.

I know I said I was waiting, but I couldn't today and I had good news. I had 17 set (since I broke one the first time I candled this group) and out of those I have what looks to be 13 growing babies. I too have at least 4 that were clear, but two of them were rather small from the seller and I think perhaps those too were pullet eggs and not fertile. Who knows, but I was happy. I am hoping that the rest will continue on to healthy happy babies. Lisa! You are amazing! Add surgeon to your list of jobs

! I can't wait to hear how the duck egg continues on!

I candled mine today. This is my first time incubating so all of this is new. I started with 18. I think at least 12 or 13 are developing with a couple more maybes. I took out two tonight that ended up being infertile. BTW... I set these eggs last Friday morning. What day am I considered on?

I would figure that to be 7 complete days as of this morning. I could totally be wrong though as I haven't done this a lot either. I'm sure Lisa can pop in with the correct answer:D

Shoot, I always have to look at a calendar and count backwards. I go by "Set on Saturday, Hatch on Saturday" That would make Sat 'Day 21' and go back from there.
If you set eggs at 7 am Sat 5/21, then Day 21 would begin at 7 am Sat 6/11.
If they didn't go by calendar weeks, I couldn't keep up with it. I can set chicken (21 days) , regular duck (28 days), and Muscovy duck (35 days) eggs weekly and as long I remember to set the same day every week, everybody can go to hatcher on the same day each week and hatch together.
If you are unsure about whether an egg is growing or not, or has stopped, it's always better to leave it in a few more days and candle again. Candling won't hurt or slow down the eggs unless you forget to put them back in the incubator after you candle them.
Good luck!
