Those are so neat. Had no idea they can be missing the outer layer. Do other eggs do that too?

I'm actually not sure. I think it can happen in emu eggs because the shell is so thick and is so many layers. Chicken eggs are created in layers too so I would suspect if you ever find one with a very thin shell, it's missing some layers.

Makes sense... it's really interesting..so is it due to a lack of calcium in the hen or just a glitch?

That I'm not actually sure about. I think it could be both. It could definitely happen if a hen isn't getting enough calcium to form the shell properly, and I'm sure it could be an 'oops' glitch too.

Ok..oh speaking of 'oops' eggs...got my first one the other day. One of the AMs. It was about the size of a medium size marble. Had a tiny pea size yolk and the rest was whites. :idunno

Didn't LocalYokel do an experiment a year or so back with using vinegar to take pigment off quail shells, making candling easier? Any chance it would work on emu eggs?

I would think removing any pigment would just cause more rapid weight loss....bad thing... Jmho
