Pyxis' Emu Chat Thread

My Dad was all about teaching us kids stuff about the Australian bush. So, we’re walking across this paddock in the middle of nowhere, and there’s this emu egg just sitting on the ground. ‘You can ‘blow’ an emu egg,’ says Dad. ‘Bring it home and I’ll show you.’

Okay, so, ‘blowing an emu egg’ (he explained) meant that you could empty it out, and keep the shell as a curiosity.

That evening, we all sat around the kitchen table, while dad started gently drilling, with a tiny bit from the tool shed, on one end of the egg.

When he got through, there was an audible ‘pop,’ and ten seconds later the entire family had evacuated to the front yard: the stench of the thing was astonishing, enough to peel paint off walls. Yours truly got the job of getting it from the house, and flinging it into a ditch down the road.
Lesson learned:

If you ever want to blow a found egg, always do it outside.

I bit the bullet and ordered a Sportsman. Gonna need the space for the emu eggs. I foresee getting myself in trouble with the egg capacity, lol

On the emu egg front, no more yet. That's not too surprising though because it can take up to five days between eggs even when they're laying regularly, and new layers are often irregular to start.

Is that one designed for emu eggs?

It's a big cabinet that can hold all kinds of eggs, but the size means it can hold about 40 emus eggs.

It can also hold 270 chicken eggs, or over 1300 quail eggs. So yeah, I could get myself in trouble with it, haha.

Hey, Pyxis. I'm a happy camper, and . . . there's something odd here.

We had a long discussion about laying/nest-building in 2013, when Boy Emu was incubating. We were astonished that an egg could be stashed for two days before being sat warmly upon.

So, if five-day intervals, and nine eggs -- not uncommon -- then forty-five days from first lay to male beginning the incubation -- ?!

Yep! Though more often it's like three or four days between eggs.

Recently a group of breeders was discussing how long they've held onto eggs before starting incubation and had them be viable, and the longest someone said was six weeks.

Six weeks. Wow!
