I bought 100+ eggs off of ebay a couple of days ago and they arrived today. I was shipped 140 eggs and have 114 ready to go into the incubator tomorrow. There were 26 eggs that were cracked when I got them. They were actually packed pretty good, so I am pleased.

I have had a problem getting a good hatch rate, but have quizzed the quail lovers at the MN meet and greet a few weeks back so I think I can do well this time.

My DW wants to know where I plan on putting 100+ quail when they are ready to go outside. I guess I need to start building the coops for them now huh?

Also, unless you have an awesome incubator you'll probably only get half of your hatch, but if you get allof your hatch then count your lucky stars and you better have their future home already started

I helped her with the bob-bird strain - my little mutt, Bumbles, is part bobwhite - and that caused a huge amount of controversy on here when I mentioned it. Someone said the bobs and coturnix had never been crossed and couldn't be crossed. Pam gave me Bumbles to see if the eggs were fertile when crossed back to Coturnix. They are.

Her operation is jaw-dropping. She has most of the quail in her basement, with another area out in the barn. I'm getting a pair of Gambels this spring and hopefully some CA if she starts breeding them.

Spooky, what are CA? I know I'm CA but I was wondering what CA means?

Sorry, short for California Valley quail. The ones with the little deely boppers on their heads

Gidday eh! I'm a Canuck with a bunch of birds and here's what I do for water. First of all here in the Great White North temps get to -30 C or -20 F plus the wind chill. On the farm 20 years I had chickens, ducks, geese, and other birds and used old cooking pots and broke the ice out w a hammer. They spent the winter in the barn and the summer in a shed. If a chicken died it was a combo of old age and the cold. Today have quail in one pen and pheasants in the other in a shed on the floor on shavings and got a water base heater for the quail and a plug in heated dog bowl for the pheasants. the shed is without windows so have a plug in timer for lights at 8 hours until warm enough that eggs won't freeze (hopefully soon) and will set the timer for 14 hours (in spite of that now getting 4 eggs daily from the 10 quail hens)

I lost one out of 20 quail this winter. The heated water base was assembled dinky so added a few metal screws to make it solid. Tried heat lamps but found they added little heat to keep water melted. Plus the #1 source of barn fires is heat lamps.

Canadian source of heated water base and dog bowl was www.berryhilllimited.com Did the math and found that importing from USA would've cost more.

Went on vacation for 4 weeks last summer and wanted the eggs to stop so set the timer back to 8 hours. The quail molted and stopped laying. Took 5 days for egg production to restart when I set the timer back.

Save electricity, save money, save the planet: don't heat the birds, they have a feather coat for a reason. Heat the water if you need to.

I have 4 doz jumbos on their way, cant wait. Hope I have a good hatch but even if only 50% thats still plenty to get me started.
