quail pen blown over by wind at least 55+ mph qust

I know if you have them on the ground some claim they are not very hardy as they are stuck on the same dirty poopy ground which I'm not willing to take any chances with mine. Eating worms and other bugs my bring worm troubles on much faster in the quail themselves..,More worming may need to be done and i hate using chemicals if i don't have to..

OMG Charlie! Glad to see the birds are all okay though. It looks the complete opposite of that her....sunny with clouds and no snow to be seen.

In The wilds of Central Cal. , I baught a 2 stall ( 12 x 12 each or 12 x 24 for both) all steel pipe horse mare-motel with a roof . One storm gave that structure flying lessons at night. ... Blew it up and over our fence and it landed about 50 feet away into the neighbor's property. When it landed it became a twited mass of steel that was a complete loss. My 2 horses were wet but none the worse for ware.

Actually that bottom wire that you see around the bottom legs of the cage unit is just like a ladder for a predator ( rat, racoon, possum, etc) to climb up on. A better idea would be to line the 4 legs with some sheet metal so that they couldn't climb up them.

Sam sounds like you had a pretty good day there.

Katy we left no chickens out today..they would have literally been blown away..

The wire around the bottom works if you put it on correctly, don't ever make it tight, leave it loose so it will flop about while something is trying to climb it..if it is taunt it will make it easier for preds to climb. I'm not worried to much about preds because i trap 24-7-365 days a year on my property..Its mainly there to keep my crazy Labs from going under the pens and scarring the little bobbies

Bossroo, that must have been some really rough wind..

quail that are released are fine, as they can move and are not stuck on dirty soil day after day..never raised any bobwhite on the soil my self, i like using the raised pens..other than this one being blown over..

im glad the quail are fine

however quail can eat insects, perfectly fine. The issue with them walking on the ground is being exposed to things like cocci and what not. However bugs in their diet are a good thing high protien and as long as it's not just random bugs you find there should be no worry of them getting BUGS from bugs lol.

I raise red worms for mine and also feed them crickets and mealworms. My birds are healthy and gorgeous.

Here you may want to read up a bit more on worms..
Hope this answer your questions as to why i don't like my birds on the ground and eating worms.

***This is the part that warrants my choice.
The parasites can live for long periods in the cecal worm and its eggs. It has recently been found that earthworms also carry Heterakis, and are thus of major importance in transmitting blackhead.
Our chickens free range around all my quail pens and so they are pooping and worms are eating, need i say anymore..

Here's a few other common bugs that can effect your birds w/(eye worms, roundworms etc) ..Wood roach, beetles, grasshoppers worms, read the info..
