Question about chicks for sale at TSC

None of the other feed stores in the area make you fillout any paper work to get chicks

so why would TSC

Time to stand up and fight on this one. You do not want to end up like we are in Nova Scotia. My feed guy told me today he is required to get the name and address of everyone that gets chicks. If you want to sell eggs - you are breakibg the law unless you are licensed to do so, and that requires a bunch more red tape. He also told me that the so-called organic free range birds are now required to be completely covered so that no bird flying over can infect them with anything. They cannot have access to mud puddles to drink out of, lest they contract some terrible disease.

This all happened because of a poultry marketing board and it's pull over our government. They have made it more and more difficult to raise a backyard flock, and because we didn't stand up and yell at the start, the suggestions are slowly becoming law.

I am just going to have to be an outlaw. I am willing to vaccinate my birds, I am willing to provide them with 5 star poultry housing, but half the reason I got chickens is to eat bugs in the yard and be beautiful strutting around out there. ARGH! I hate paying taxes to a government bent on making everyone dependant on them.....

Sorry to rant. This province is frustrating. I understand what they are trying to do... some of the diseases out there are darn right frightening, but they fail to understand that by keeping small backyard flocks of heritage breeds, we might just be doing something right for once.

Wow, our TSC will ask you your zip code about every 4th customer at the register, and ours don't even ask, they just put in the Albemarle one, lol. Ours has the tubs set up as well, and since I've had a good experience with buying chicks and ducklings from them in the past, I'll probably buy some this year. I am glad that they are making people buy 6! I've rescued so many 4-5 week old "ugly" chicks right after Easter that people just didn't think were cute any more. Our TSC buys from Privett hatchery as well. I think it is managers choice as to which hatchery they buy from though, so it may be something to do with the hatchery that yours has chosen.

Technically in NC, they cannot require personal info on any purchases that aren't dangerous (like certain chemicals, etc). They also cannot deny you service if you refuse to give it. Lets face it, how do they know it's your real address anyway? Our state really doesn't care what you do, as long as they get their tax money out of it. I've always said that if NC could tax the air you breathed, they would! That's why I'm beginning to look west for a homestead. But, that's another rant, lol.

Hope this helps,
Emily in NC

I stopped by the TSC in Cleburne, Texas today for some feed..
They had the tubs of chicks, so I picked out 4 cute little banties..

Then at the register they wanted to see my drivers license..I pretty much knew what was up at that point..(Thanks to reading about the NAIS here)

Fortunatly they said I needed to get a total of 6 chicks, so I told them to just put the chicks back..

They did still get a phone number out of my roomate..Saying they were doing a survey

Hello,
Chicks came in at my tsc and I bought 6 chicks. The guy that helped me told me that the group P E T A got on tsc for selling them and they now want address and phone number to make sure we aren't going to kill them. Not that I know what good it would do to have my phone number. When I got home last night I looked here on this board to see if anyone else had run into this situation. I will probably buy other chicks from local sources or hatch my own! If I can hide it from my husband!LOL!

Umm...and what happens if people ARE buying them to eat? They're very chickens! PETA needs to take a hike

If anyone from PETA calls to ask what I'm doing with my chickens (which happens to include snuggling the little ones and spending waaay too much money on a fancy coop

) they will get an earful.

And FTR, I got chicks at TSC yesterday and they did ask for my phone number. And I did give it to them.

I just got home from buying my first chicks ever from a feed store in Westminster MD. I bought 8. I had to fill out a paper with contact info: name, address and phone number. I asked who they gave them to and the girl said she didn't know. Now I wish I had made something up!
