I noticed yesterday Fawkes has this chin flap. It doesn't seem like there is anything in it, but we're worried. They are about 7 weeks old now. The other emu don't have this.. He is eating drinking and moving around just fine, as far as we can tell.

Has anyone seen this before? Is it a reason to be concerned?

I've had emus get bee stings, and the skin around their jaw will expand like this. It goes away in a few days. Nothing to worry about! Emus will always be super curious, for better or for worse.

If your emu were impacted, it would probably act more sickly and would not eat/drink. So long as your emu continues to act healthily I think it'll be okay!

i had someone else mention the thing about bee stings, so phew, he seems okay!

Unfortunately, one of them ate a big piece of metal clasp from a bird toy today, and I'm worried this will cause impaction.

What can I do? I read oil and metamucil to help it pass. We don't have avian vets around here. I really hope he will just pass it, but I will be shocked if he does. It was a huge circular piece of metal clasp from a parrot toy.

Oh no, I hope it does pass! Mineral oil and metamucil seem to be the standard treatment, so it might be the best you can do. Keep an eye on him to make sure he keeps eating and drinking.

Emus always seem to be getting into trouble! It's rare I'm not worrying myself about them. Now I'll be worried for your baby!
