Question about lump on dog (Another update 12/26) Maybe good ending!

Well the rescue called today with her results and it doesn't look good. Turns out the lump is a stage 2 mast cell tumor. She has to go in for better removal of the cells around the area. Honestly, I don't know why they did it this way. Now she has to go under a second time when they could have taken a needle aspiration and only put her through one surgery.

My uncle has her right now and we were all hoping for good news. I haven't told him yet and I think I will wait until after the holidays. I have to call the vet tomorrow to get all of the info about further treatments. It seems like we are dealing with an unstable bomb though. She could be perfectly fine after the surgery for many years, or she could have issues in a few months to a year.

I feel so bad about this. She is such a sweet dog and I know it will hurt my uncle if he has to give her up. I knew this dog would be a gamble, but the chances of it turning out to be this type of tumor were so small. I feel like I have failed both her and my uncle.

I have read studies of cancer tumors developing at vaccine injection sites.People get those too,but it usually disappears in a few weeks/months.

Hope the removal of the tumor saves your animal.

Don't feel bad or have regrets. You are giving this dog the best part of her life, if it is short or long. And your family will be better for having known her too. It's never easy to part with them, regardless of how long we have them. Make every day count.

Hoping for the best results...

I had a similar circumstance. Found a cute little sheltie mix, turned her into the shelter I worked at. She had some hard lumps on her belly. Never what you want to see, hard ones are usually bad. A rescue who did tiny dogs took her as a favor to me. Tumors got removed and sent in, came back as cancerous. they ended up deciding to let her live her last time, however long it would be, with one of the rescue founders. She got to go to the dog park and sleep on the bed, have a full bowl of food and lots of treats and love.....and a few months later, she died. It was much faster than any of us expected but nobody regretted taking her on.

I bet she would be ever so grateful for a soft spot to land in her golden days/weeks/months/years.

Thanks for the kind words, all. I gave my uncle the news today. He seemed sad, but he also wants to keep her. The rescue said they would pay all the medical bills for the operation, so financially it won't be so hard on him. I called the rescue today and we are going to try and get her back there this week for the X-ray and operation, if she needs it.

I'm happy he has decided he wants to keep her despite her cancer. She is definitely a special dog and I think she came into our lives for a reason. Hopefully, she has many more happy years ahead of her!

I will be sure to post a picture of her once I am able to upload a nice one!
