Let's assume it's just a pecking injury an not fowl pox, which would likely have more than just one lesion. Put some Blu-kote on it, just a tiny dab with a Q-tip, and it should clear up.

To be on the safe side, open her beak and inspect the inside of her mouth for sores. Are you in an area with a mosquito problem? Fowl pox is spread by mosquitoes.

I was able to look in her mouth and see nothing suspicious. She was so sweet while I was handling her, too. I checked the other chickens and see nothing odd at the moment. Here are a couple pics. Any info appreciated!

It looks like a clean, normal mouth. No worries. I've had black crusty spots appear once in a great while on combs, and Blu-kote always resolved them. If Blu-kote makes no difference, then it may be a tumor. That isn't necessarily cause for concern, either. I have a hen who has a tumor on her head and she's had it for at least five years. She's ten.

View attachment 1365295 View attachment 1365296 Hi everyone-I promised I would update you on Elle’s condition so here it is: a couple days after I posted, the black thing fell off Elle’s beak and there appeared to be a sore beneath it. It looked good for a few days, but now it appears that she has scraped it or something because she has what looks like dried blood clotting on it. From seeing it today, I believe the original black spot was also clotted blood. I have now painted it with Blu-Kote and will see what happens next. She now has a purple beak. Here is what she looked like this morning before I painted her beak. That is just dried blood/debris on either side of the original spot. I was able to wipe it off. Thanks for your help!

I am posting this question in a new thread but you’ve been so helpful I wanted to get your opinion on this, too. I am attaching pictures of my silkie who is about 14 weeks old. I am taking my polish cockerel to be re-homed today and we are now suspecting our silkie might also be a boy. Wondering if you can help me determine with these pictures. My daughter heard a crowing from the coop about 7:30 this morning and she believes it was the silkie. Obviously that would help us determine but I want to hear that for myself. Here are some pictures of the head, wattles, comb, and tail feathers along with gull pics of the silkie. Thank you for your help once again!
