QUESTION ABOUT SIZE

They are sooo pretty but they look so sad. doesn't that wire hurt there little feets? do you ever get them out so they can run around and play?

I don't get it? A dust pan like you use with a broom? would you use a metal or plastic one? guess they could use the handle to perch on too to help there little feets.

in our experience, quail are dressing out at 55-60% live weight for males, 50% for females.
didnt want to waste time processing smaller quail so found the biggest I could and added a twist. my scale only weighed to 300 grams and I found I like to cull when they start getting noisy, 10 oz by 6 weeks to get a pardon to 8 weeks. after several generations we got it down to 10 oz by 5 weeks for some keepers.
may be hurting myself or limiting overall full term growth, but they aint making it that long. males and females grow at almost same rate until 6 weeks for me.

to answer your question, imho 12-14 oz is a very nice jumbo quail. if you get a bunch getting there with the expected sometimes smaller and some jumbo jumbo standard deviations, you could count yourself lucky.

Not sad at all, in fact they do their little happy dance all day long...lol, wire doesn't hurt their feet, they also get to run around in the summer out doors in a netted area. Never had any problems with them being unhappy except when it's time to slaughter, lol...
