Question about varieties of white quail

Fawn chicks look like a carmel colored pharaoh chicks they dont resemble jumbo whites at all. Sometimes jumbo whites are pretty pale, even to the point when theyre in the light they have kind of a 'silver' look to their feathers. If its a yellow chick its white or its golden.

So how is it "down under?"  It is so fun to find out Im talking to someone so far on this site.

Yes, I think I read that about the head spot particularly in both possible.  This was on the wing or side of the body though and it was not just a spot but a blotch of many feathers were brown and they had the golden striping seen on brown pharaohs.  Im hoping to some day get some English White hatching eggs.  I love the small stature and when they crow it sounds more like a squeaker toy than a clicker.

Hehe its frustrating down here being really far from all the beautiful birds people post pictures of or sell. To make things worse I'm on the west side and quail arent very popular, there are no farms or breeders, just people who have a group of quail and breed them randomly.
I seem to be the only person selectively breeding my quail.

I have shipped eggs from the other side of the country to get new stocks because what is available here is no good.

As far as clicker / squeaker sounds, all my quail sound pretty much the same when they crow, i wonder if they are the squeaker toy type of sound. Though they have a range it seems.

I notice that the chicks I hatched from eggs that were the furthest away i could possibly get them from sound different to my other chicks.

Some people say their jap quails lay eggs to 10g elsewhere but mine started at 12g and are now at just under 15g (hens are 350 to 400grams.) So perhaps the sounds vary according to the general size and "dialect " of the birds haha :)

I do believe it is the size of the bird not the color or variety that results in the pitch of the crow. These eggs I hatched from the white quail were very small compared to my pharaoh eggs I was getting from my flock. They fell right through the egg turner holder holes so I had to put material along the row to contain them. The babies were very small and very fragile. The one remaining white one I have is a female Im pretty certain. Im hoping to get some eggs from her and even though her offspring wont be white Im hoping they will be small with the squeaker crow. I miss hearing it. I couldnt resist saying "thats so cute" every time Nilli crowed. A skunk killed him.

Awwh thats sad with the skunk.
I'm trying to get more whites myself since they are extremely popular here. Hoping to breed them a bit bigger.
Though they are laying decent sized eggs they dont have much meat, which really is OK since people are buying them from me for pets ayway.
Id still like them to be a bit chunkier. Have issues with bullying in the white strain so its hard to get them to cross with my pharaohs.

I wonder at what point the cots were brought in to Australia and when they stopped being brought in. We have a bunch of colours so I wonder if they appeared before or after we stopped bringing in new blood. It would be really interesting to be able to know that history.

I have a new incubator on the way that has an egg rocker, you hatch yours in the turner still rather than taking them out and laying them down?
Do you find a better hatch with the eggs upright? I have been looking in to hatching upright but worry about the chicks like that.

Ive only tried hatching the one way, in a turner and upright. Sometimes I find the chick hatched and in the turner hole. That is even after I have taken the egg out prior to hatching and laid it on the side. The chick will find its way back to the turning, climb up in the hole and go for I ride I guess.
Funny, I want smaller and you are trying to breed larger whites. Im not in it for the eggs or meat. Mine are all pets. Ive not tried eating the eggs. I scramble them up for my chickens or else hatch them. They are such a mess to try to cook.
Regarding history of coturnix, there are some folks on here that know a awful lot. You aught to ask out. Start a thread inquiring. I bet many will add in what they know. Folks are so nice and seem eager to share their wisdom. Cheers. Off to bed for me. Skunk watch begins in a few hours.

Kudos to you for working on your own to improve your birds. Are you sure you cannot bring in more birds? Though I'm sure if you could it would cost a lot, not to mention red tape.
I take my eggs out of the turners and lay them flat on their sides the way they would normally rest on a flat surface.

Have you tried quail egg scissors to open your quail eggs for eating? They make it so fast and clean to open! If you have quail eggs you need one of these!

Our quarantine system is insane coming in to just my state, I cant even import live birds from other states.

Allows king quail, stubble quail (Coturnix pectoralis) and brown quail (Coturnix ypsilophora) only.

I understand we need to protect our native species but the others are already here anyway.
I have received eggs in the post. Maybe I've broken the law without even knowing  whups.

Never heard of scissors for doing this. I have been scrambling them for my chickens to eat and when I got to break them open my thumb generally penetrates the egg. I find that the membrane if very tough but the shell very fragile. The scissors just might be the answer! Thanks.
