Question on GMO feed

Well we are eating GMO's that are poison, you say, and our diet is killing us, you say. But people are living longer then ever before. Hmmmmmmm....
I love this argument. The present generation in their 80's has lived longer. The general direction of health & longevity in the US is sliding downward.

So... After reading through the threads, and the opinions on both sides, here's what I've got:

People are more angry about the fact that it isn't published which foods have GMO's so they can't make a decision for themselves.

The studies have not been well documented on GMO's (for whatever reason), and now they really won't be. At least from this country.

I will say that my husband's family are farmers and ranchers, and they deal with organic cattle. Now I'm not going to profess to understand everything to do with GMO's vs cross breeding. I do know that the straw they grow is pest resistant, and to an extent drought resistant. I don't know how these crops were developed, or their seeds manufactured, but they use this product to feed the cattle in the winter, when they can't free range enough for their dietary requirements, and when those cattle are in turn butchered, their meat is certified organic. I will say that I can certainly taste the difference between that meat and the meat I get out of everyday grocery stores (oh how I wish we were stationed closer).

At this point I personally don't know which is best. Being able to develop crops that can grow without near as much water and that are pest and disease resistant will go a long way toward feeding those areas that have to worry about starvation. And if such a product were developed, then wouldn't it make sense then that less pesticides would need to be used? Food for thought, please don't eat me....

Sparky, I don't understand your whole post, but.......Their claims of feeding the world is false, read through the links, they are using more sprays for some reason, rather than less. And drought resistance, I'm not sure about that, I don't think that's what the whole GM thing is about. Plus, if it's indeed harmful, what's the point if it is getting food to the people and killing them slowly in other ways. There are much better alternatives. And greed is always at play with these large operations, what are GMO's going to do about that?

And yea, who will dare say we are living longer and healthier now a days? Disease is sky-rocketing, longevity.....what's that! We are experts on being sick, not being healthy! And covering up symptoms, not healing. Making the pharmaceutical companies rich.

I am totally AGAINST GMO food and all FOR GMO labeling of foods. I just came across this, maybe Monsanto has a hand in how the goverment runs also, or maybe the goverenment is afraid to deal with a company like Monsanto.

Quote:
Sec. 733. In the event that a determination of non-regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated, the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower, farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with section 411(a) or 412(c) of the Plant Protection Act, which interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduction, continued cultivation, commercialization and other specifically enumerated activities and requirements, including measures designed to mitigate or minimize potential adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the Secretary’s evaluation of the petition for non-regulated status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner: Provided,

That all such conditions shall be applicable only for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to complete any required analyses or consultations related to the petition for non-regulated status:

Provided further, That nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the Secretary’s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of the Plant Protection Act.
It just protects farmers from having their livelyhoods destroyed when someone filing a lawsuit wins a temporary victory in a lower court, by waiting until there is a FINAL ruling, and all appeals are completed.

Do you have any proof of that ? I didn't think so.

These are predictions and nothing else. We are on the downward slide. All factors will contribute. Poor food, lack of medical care etc. Reminds me of my MIL poo pooing recycling in the 90's because they always just trashed stuff her whole life. Yea she was 70 & her whole life was less than 100 years & the landfills in PA were getting full. Not a long time in the scheme of things. One generation has lived longer than the rest. Not really proving anything.

I'm curious...do those who trash GMOs use deodorant? The endocrine disruptors in deodorants concern me more than GMOS.

Yea, it is disturbing. There are homemade "natural" alternatives that I'm looking into.
Even shampoos, perfumes/colones and other similar products are just harmful chemicals, I'm trying to get away from it all, buying natural alternatives and see if I can't make more of my own.
