Questions re: roundworms!I want to treat ASAP. Help! I have broody hens

I wouldn't worry about getting that fly spray I mentioned now unless you have a lot of flies...but yes I would just wipe some on her...but not close to the wound, and spray some around the area she is housed for now.

I'd pick up the V spray and spray the wound twice a day.
It should heal just fine.

You are having such a great chicken momma experience huh?
Craigslist is a good place to start with rehoming roosters...if you can eat them.
The bottle says to spray 3-4 times so I figure if I aim to do it 2 - 4x will be good. It still looks about the same as the picture I posted from yesterday. no redness or swelling on the skin around it. I don't like that there are any feathers stuck in it, but each time i've sprayed I've been able to loosen tiny bits here, and there. I tried to lightly wipe it (the spots that look like stuck debris) with clean gauze this morning. She deff does Not like that. She is patient with letting me spray it so I am going to use that as my primary keep it clean method.

We deff. can't eat them. Neither of us have eaten meat in years. I think it would be easier for me to donate them to someone else's soup pot if they weren't so nice!

You are doing great!
The V spray works great too the powerful spray is good huh!?
I'm not going to read back right now because I am in a hurry but I wanted to mention (if I haven't already) I have zero flies issues.
It was brought to my attention the other day that the Deep Litter Method may be one of the reasons I don't have flies around my coop.
I didn't always use the DLM and I can remember flies ebbing around before I sed the DLM.
But I also ferment their feed...and people claim that helps keep flies down too, but although I didn't have a lot of flies before the DLM I still had a few and I have always used the FF.
So..my point is you may want to consider using the DLM in your run IF you have a fly problem.
The V spray is awesome! Using a syringe to irrigate under the skin flap worked but did not Push out debris the same way. I can spritz chunks off the scabby area without touch it! My hen appreciates this too I think. I wouldn't say I have a fly issue, but maybe like you say ebbing around. Fermented feed is interesting to me. Maybe when I get their lives, and my yard back together I can look into it.
I've used DLM in the coop during the winter, and in the run, but never thought to do it in the summer since i let them range when its warm. I've always switched to raking it out. I will keep an eye on it.

Scabbing IS GOOD!
it's the only reason i'm leaving it uncovered. it's so ugly to look at, but does cover the whole surface, and isn't cracking at all.

Not alot, but some ebbing as you mentioned has been our normal. I will lightly wipe her with the spinosad, and avoid the wound. Everyone's poop butts are improving so that will help with the flys i'm sure. She is roosting at night with her boy so I will do the inside of the coop. I get up early enough to just remove her, and put her in her pen before anyone starts getting off the roosts.

I separated my injured girl into her own little pen again for the day. I also put up a little canopy for her. it's supposed to rain on and off again today so i wanted to make sure she stayed dry.

We also put up a temp. run for the roos. We couldn't quite figure where to put one big enough for all three, and were worried or top roo might pick a fight if he felt crowded. I left the top roo with the girls for the day. Abe is also the most "gentle" he seems to respect their wishes more when they want to get away. He hung out mostly by his injured lady yesterday.... For now just 2 are removed. Husband, and I are looking into rooster flock /separation type situations, and their set ups/room requirements. I'm posting pictures below for your viewing enjoyment.
We put them around the back of our house so they are still "with the other hens" but sort of around the corner so not in direct sight all the time. #2 roo Blackbeard is pacing/dancing the fence (which i read he might do), and # 3 Brian Boitano doesn't care either way. The 2 faverolles we separated have been acting like little thugs, and tag up on the girls. We call them tweedle dee, and tweedle dum. They are always together so we think their little spot will work for now. We gotta catch our breath, and re asses....

You are doing great! If being bandage bothers her...leave it off.
She should be fine and it doesn't sound like it is getting infected which is great!

Thanks for sharing the pics...I love your scenery!

Watch out for predators!

So I'm going to give a final worm/chicken update for this thread. I lost internet for a short while.
My injured chicken has been healing beautifully. I have continued spraying her with V. Kept it well irigated, and rinsed out chunks each day. No fly strike, but I don't want to jynx myself.

I had two broodies who were also being treated for worms. The hen who is the whole reason I got roosters ended up being caught off gaurd when the eggs hatched. One chick died. She just chucked them from her nest. I quick tucked them under my second broody, and she accepted the wet cold babies, and hatched all the remaining eggs! She has 9 lovely little chickies!

Popcorn did not perk up with eggies, and extra love. Her poops are the only ones who's are still soft... So I've continued watching her like a hawk. She started laying down more around the yard, and was avoiding the flock a bit. She is my top hen. She was laying down at my doorstep when I got home from work. I have been checking her feet, but there was obvious swelling on her toe yesterday. It's about the size of a large pea.... Checked the bottom of her tootsies, and sure enough she has bumble foot! I don't think it's advanced.... maybe mild to moderate? I had checked her feet before the worm fiasco, but maybe the spots just weren't as obvious yet. It has been so wet here this summer we are just now getting a break from rain. I cut back on bedding a bit when I was managing mites, and worms... she is my largest bird... she has 3 spots. Two on one foot, and one on the other. Anyone wanna give me directions to the next thread/place I should go to for info on this. I'll appreciate it! I soaked her foot in Epsom for as long as she would let me last night. I got the top of the scab off the largest spot, but not "plug". Sprayed with V, and wrapped her feet. I'm going into town today to get more Vetrycin, and some Neosporin. She is separated. I also don't see it on anyone else's feet..... at least it isn't' fly strike? .... I haven't given up yet, and everyone (except popcorn) looks less stressed, happier chicken selves...

Oh girl bumble foot is easy to cure.
After you take the scab off you gotta dig a little or squeeze the hard puss out.
You can do it!
Let me go find "god instructions " for you.

Something easy to cure!? Maybe my chicken summer luck is turning around!! Popcorn is laying down in her crate now. We put her in a little sick pen yesterday to limit her walking. She is one of my original crew! So i'm feeling a little relief to know that this is something I can do!! If you have instructions I'm here to follow them!! I didn't soak her last night. I got home too late, and just crashed. Tonight i'm ready though! She starts panting when I think she is in pain/stressed. Is there anything I can do to help her with this? There are horrible pictures online of what the bumblefoot can turn into so obviously I don't want that!! What is your prefered "digging" tool to get the hard puss out? Tweezers? "take the scab off you gotta dig a little or squeeze the hard puss out."..... Actually sounds not so bad! I was trying to not squeeze to hard on the first soak. I hoped it was softening, and loosening to make it easier maybe after this soak?
Maybe you could have guessed, but I don't want "chicken foot surgery" to be my first option, and seems to be everyone's go to when you start searching what to do. So I have a fresh tube of neosporin, and my V. Her foot was nice and wrapped still before bed so i'm just leaving it like that until I'm ready to soak her feet again. Also what is your best foot soaking method? I've been bringing her in the house, and standing her in a shallow bucket. The spot on her toe barely has a scab, and is the most swollen. The two others are more of a flat round scab.
Congrats on all the babies!
Thank you! :yesss::love

To me easy = digging the pus out and letting it heal.
I guess I mean easy as in it can be done at home with out a vet and can be cured without daily shots of medicine.

I have used tweezers...not as easy as an exact knife though.

You really have to dig the corn out then squeeze the pus out.
The quicker you get it done the less the pain for the poor girl.
I hold the chicken while DH does the digging and squeezing.
We have only done it twice and the faster he gets it done the better.

So.....I have not tried the soak and let's see.
I rather get it out and let the foot heal.

This is how I think of it.
Ever had a zit that hurt?
The quicker it gets popped the better...right?
It may hurt for a second or two while you are popping it but it will feel so much better once its popped.
It you don't pop it the pain is constant, which can make you feel bad all the time.

eta..I personally don't look at the digging the bumble foot gunk out as surgery.

I agree with the "easy = Digging puss plug from foot". looking at it as getting the gunk out makes sense. It's more like debriding a chicken wound or when you get a splinter our bodies make soft puss that pushes it out, and chicken puss is hard so it stays in their foot making the corn.... I will enlist help tonight. I could see that the plug moved, and was hoping it might soften, and be easier to remove after another cleaning/soaking tonight. I am so over "wait & see" method. I just want my happy healthy chickens back!
You agree with V, and then neo & wraping to keep clean once I am finished digging though right?
Should i give her electrolytes in her water after her "procedure"?
By exact knife to you mean a small utility knife, or an exacto knife like people use for crafts and detailed cutting? I have both. Whats the best way to sterilize the too before I use it?
