Hey, there!
We started raising chickens this spring. All together we started with 40 barnyard mix chicks that we purchased from a friend. Once they started getting old enough we realized that we had A LOT of roosters. About a week ago we sent 16 to be slaughtered, and they are comfortably resting in our freezer. I was sure to give our neighbors across the way a couple since they were so patient and tolerant of our gang crowing all day and visiting their yard on occasion.
Our country journey began about about four years ago, and we are enjoying it a lot. We're about a year ahead of schedule in our plan to add animals to our little homestead here. Along with the 20 or so chickens (we do still have four roos) that remain we also have four sheep that we are raising for food. It really is a lot of fun.
I have enjoyed learning on the Facebook forum, and my four year old is a quick study in becoming a farm hand. She is the official egg gatherer. A job which she she takes VERY seriously. She has no problem standing up to a hen that doesn't want to give up her egg. LOL Hopefully, one day we'll get to experience the hatching process, but I don't think that will be for a while.
I've poked around this site on and off over the years, and it is a wonderful resource that I am glad to have. This time around, learning about fermenting food is what brought me here. I have finally decided that I am going to start doing just that thanks to the simple post shared here on how to and why.
Looking forward to learning a lot more here.
Thanks for having me!
Tina
