Quotes and Thoughts for the Day

I know the feeling. I had 16 hens in the coop then about 2 months ago stopped in the feed store and got 4 babies. Then on Monday went back and got 4 more. Got 24 now. Had to keep the baby chicks in my bedroom in a cage for a month till the weather got warmer. Got them in the coop now but still in the cage. :)

We're at 13.  I just rehomed our extra cockerel and I have one in the infirmary.  Not sure if the little tyke will make it, but we've been trying all week and she hasn't given up yet. If she does pass I fear I'll cave and pick up two.  I've done this before, I just can't help myself.  And I'll have to buy feed eventually so I can't avoid the store like I'd need to haha

What's wrong with the sick chicken?

Thanks, Bill. Just need another 20 hours' sleep lol I am ridiculously tired today.

I've been property window shopping again to try and keep myself awake and amused. Found the most wonderful mess of a house at a great price: http://www.daft.ie/sales/tulligoline-templeglantine-limerick/1039029/ I'm going to have to import all of you to help me scrape and paint if I buy that one! ;)

But don't you think that add-on at the back would make a stunning conservatory? Knock 3/4 of the walls down… replace it with windows and a proper roof... I've always wanted a conservatory and they are actually not to horrendously priced, so long as you put them up yourself. Hmm, that place has potential written ALL over it.

Wow, I feel sore from just looking at all the work needing to get done. Looks nice, so what is that price in American $? Guess I better buy a ticket now, oh I loved the mustard yellow and blue room, lol.

Quote: It's $27,558 It's not that much work really… Just lots of painting and scraping and that back bit… I don't know what they were thinking off.

That blue and yellow room will be first on the list for a repaint

What's wrong with the sick chicken?

She quit eating and drinking on her own. My first batch of chickens all seem to have done the same thing around the same time. This one was in the house all winter because she was stunted so I doubt she picked something up. I had taken previous ones to the vet and the only thing we could ever come up with is some kind of genetic defect. I've had her on antibiotics for about 5 days now and I've had to tube in food and water. I went through it before and so far none made it despite my best efforts. As long as she'll let me I'm going to continue helping her eat and drink and when she shows me she's had enough then I will let her go. I don't want to, but whatever is going on I haven't figured out a cure. I've had numerous fecals done, had them checked for egg binding (she's never layed probably from being stunted), and I regularly spray and check for bugs. And it's all one group...all my other ones (knock on wood) have never showed the slightest sign of illness.

You might be right on the genetic thing since its not affecting the rest of your flock.

It's tempting.  My  hens are playing around with the idea of going broody and if they do officially I may just sneak two under one.  But at the same time I shouldn't.  I made a promise...like I did last year...and then I ended up with four.

I need a bigger coop.  :lau I want babies!

My hens are driving me crazy with their broody behavior. I had one broody give up today, after being broody for almost four weeks (I ordered chicks, but they won't arrive until the 8th). Im dissapointed to see that she threw in the towel.

I have another hen who just starting brooding today. Last week she and her sister hid a nest of 14 eggs from me. I call them the evil twins.

I took their eggs and gave them fake ones, but only one of the hens is now showing broody signs. Fingers crossed somebody is broody when the chicks arrive at the post office! Lol.

Quote: The house is charming. If that is American dollars it is a steal.
If it is British pounds... I have no idea.
I like the lay out, I think it is good that you are young!
How much property? is it zoned for the type of farming you wish to do?

Make sure that it is not lead paint that you need to scrape or that there is asbestos anywhere that would need to be replaced... That will add to the cost of the place in refurbishing.
