Raccoon Baiting

I find them just napping in my backyard. I let him catch up on some sleep before I relocated him to a forever home.

He doing what he was taught don’t kill
How about you don’t kill them. I’ll continue to kill every single one I catch. I catch a bunch too. ;)
You have already taken part of their habitat away by existing with your house and your yard.
Doesn’t matter really if you kill them or not disease will get them or the tires of a car. Trapping and shooting them is a quicker death then getting squished by a Toyota Corolla then crawling into the weeds on the side of the road suffering.

Only nap better is a dirt nap!
I don't hate these animals, I just have a problem with them being in close proximity to my flock. Anywhere else that they live & want to roam (& not kill chickens) is fine by me... provided that they are not destroying property.

As for those who say 'don't kill them they're just doing what is instinctual & they were there first', I can only say that while I understand what they do & why, it's a 'them or my chickens' scenario . While I treat my chickens like pets & couldn't kill one, I do not have any issues killing predators.

As for them (the raccoons, opossum, etc) being there first, that could be true. The first ones to go into the light probably were there first. Every one who's come after has been a transient, rotating into the territory and then into the light.

Just want to say, I do understand the concept of not spreading the problem to others, but I cannot bring myself to kill a wild animal unless I am starving or it is fatally injured. But it is legal in my area to kill them if caught. Any suggestions?

.22LR shotshell (“rat shot”) is our preferred method — but only if in a leg or foot-hold trap. Do NOT shoot into a live trap.

For a live trap put it in a heavy garbage bag, then run a section of garden hose between it and the tailpipe of your car — outside only. Will be painlessly dispatched in under 5 minutes (give it 10 minutes just to be sure).
