Raised pen duck flooring

We are building a new pen for the ducks, its raised about the ground and we laid hardware cloth down. What is the least messy flooring to put down for their feets? We use straw now but its always such a mess, We were looking into astro turf that we can just hose off but that seems to be extremely expensive unless I am looking in the wrong places?

Plastic will breed bacteria because you can't ever really get all those nooks and crannies clean.

good point, what else would be good for the inside, i have seen lots of people just let them sit/walk on the hardware cloth, is that sufficient?
