Raisiing Quail with Chickens

Quote:
as everyone has said, we have seen this question come up A TON. TECHNICALLY you can keep them together, you risk disease, killing, and other stuff..best thing is to keep them apart

imho i would NEVER let them free range together(or let quail free range at all)

Thanks all for the suggestion to not mix birds!
So when you say"keep them apart", what exactly do you mean? A few yards or a larger distance? Just trying to see if it's doable in the confines of my yard without a huge construction project.

I think sneezing distance would be a good start. 5' to 10'... Handle your quail\\gamebirds first, then take care of the chickens and other yard birds... May never be a problem, but if its easy to not take the chance, why gamble. I will say, if the only way I could keep quail was with my chickens, I would likely keep quail with my chickens.... Just be aware of the risk, practice a little bio security and common sense, and you should be good. The birds are really worth the trouble... If we can help, just ask... Bil

Just take your favorite quail and a heapin' big scoop of chicken poop. Butter the little feller up like a piece of toast with the poop and set him in his own cage. If the stinky little inmate lives for a week, yer good to go.

YEARS ago I kept quail in my coop.. they were in rabbit hutches up off the ground with chickens running around underneath.. I know it was a dumb idea.. but we were having problems with a local beagle.. so it was worth the risk .. I was extremely lucky that I had no health issues between the birds.. if I was in the same circumstances now that I was then.. i would do it the same way... (we were renting and the landlord would not allow birds in the house)

now having said all that.. this time around my quail will be living in our house (we own the house).. the chickens are outside (except for new hatchlings... but the brooders are in a separate room from the quail)

it kinda falls under the same category as keeping chickens and turkeys together, sure you can do it but there are definitely risks and some of them are terminal. I don't have space luxury so i have to keep them all in the same building, i try and keep the contact to a minimum but I've been lucky so far.. (and yes there are turkeys in that building too
