Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
Mind if I join this thread? I have 4 outdoor girls, and an 7wk old indoor black silkie, Stella Luna. She is SO sweet! I just adore having an inside girl. She isn't potty trained, but I have diapers made out of Face Masks. We plan to move her to the coop when she gets older, tho. I sure will miss her little peeps!
Welcome, welcome!! Aww, Stella Luna! One of my kiddos' favorite books!! Love it! I'd love to see the face mask diapers (on Stella, of course!).

What sweet babies!! You are super smart to make sure their new outdoor structure is solid. We had "something" rip open hardware cloth like it was paper and take a bird one time. We double and triple reinforce everything now. Darn food chain! :)
Awww..so sorry :hugsYES...we moved into our home almost a year ago. No coop building in the winter and we had late snowfalls so ground stayed frozen. We have to level and lay cement slab....then build our coop building. So gonna be slow but will get done......eventually...lol!
Going to try some small watermelon pieces for my babies...its HOT today !

Ditto that "Hot" comment!! It's a balmy 109 here right now. Poor chooks! After the constant rain of winter and the really quick heat up of summer, they just haven't gotten much of a break!

Hatchalongs are fabulous! But, now what? And, what if you got a box of chicks in the mail? What if you picked up some little chooks from a breeder or farm store? Now what??? Hey, let's raise some lil' ones together!! I have chicks overflowing the farm right now, and would love to exchange ideas for brooding, feeding, transitioning, flock integration, health concerns, and pictures -LOTS of pictures!!
Here's a pic of one of my brooders - this one is a produce box from Costco (organic onions to be exact) with a heating pad system for warmth. These are Silverudd's Blues and 55 Flowery Hens.

I love when they are so tiny..

Spent yesterday not being a chicken mamma. Sometimes you've just got to take a break! :)

Notice the little pile of poo she made just before I took her picture. Keeping it real my friends, keeping it real.

Beautiful pics. Good for you for getting out to do something different!

I made this little outdoor brooder (barely out the back door on my screened-in porch), made from scrap pieces of wood, sides were solid and the big monster human would come down from above. So last week, i cut in a window, used a piece of plastic sheeting (old Jeep window replacement) Left the heat plate out during the day while its hot, gave them more room, but put it back in at night.

Super handy and clever!! I especially like the window in the front!! I need (for next season - because I promised to grow out what I have :) ) something like that right out the door - we just did a big deck project and there is left over wood....hmm, the ideas are percolating!!

Thanks. It worked pretty well. I could watch them at their level before sticking my hand in, and then they didn't panic so badly lol! And it let them see out, and provided more light to them. I actually sold all 14 of those lavs this week, so its empty out there now. Hmmmm... lol!

Cute quick story, i still have a few babies with mommas that can't find their way up ladders at night. Went to put them up tonight and found 2 little OEGBs under the wings of a juvie pullet! She is only about 9 weeks old herself. It was the cutest thing.

Tempting. I might do one more hatch of lav orps. They sell well and i still have people asking for them. AND, i didn't even get to keep any this year. Was hoping my broodies would take care of adding to my own flock. And the incubators' silence is getting annoying.
