Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
Does anyone else try and 'pressure your hens to become broody?

I have one hen, Pompo that lets me hold her and pet her either when it's dark, or when she's just woken up. I always go out when im up if it's still dark and hold her in my lamp and pet her, and coo at her saying she'd be a good mama. LOL!

I've heard of mothers doing it to their children, works out fairly often for them, maybe it'll work out for me if I tell her she'd be a good mama enough!

She's a RIR, so I don't have any hope of her becoming broody, but it's always fun to talk to the beauty.

I risked the health of my hand to pull these out for individual pics, but she actually didn't fight me too badly.
And Oh, i was shocked to find another empty shell this morning, so 6 hatched, not just 5. :wee
I had given her 7, thought i pulled 2 clears, but was really only 1! :clap

Got inside and realized i only had pics of 5, so when i went back out, i didn't know which light chick i had missed. I had missed the one in the back. :D

Oh my goodness!!!! They are ADORABLE!!!! Glad your hand is till in-tact there:lau Living dangerously messing with broody momma's babies:oops:

The chicks went out into the temp run for their first day trip yesterday. Getting too big even for the expanded brooder and started pecking at each other yesterday morning! Was a rush to get a larger outdoor space ready enough for all day occupancy with close supervision. I just need one more rain-free week to finish the coop and permanent run! If they'll just not eat each other before then! :fl

Starting today with days outdoors and nights in the brooder. Glad I have jumbo dog kennels around. I'm going to be ferrying chicks for the next week. :wee Back and forth. Oh well.

Still got all 25 that I started with. I'll post better pictures later. They grow up so fast! IMG_3779.JPG IMG_3780.JPG IMG_3786.JPG IMG_3795.JPG IMG_3796.JPG IMG_3798.JPG

Awww...they are getting so big! They have a nice outside play area! I wish I could get some grass to grow in our yard up here on the mountain!

Back home today with mixed reviews on adult children taking care of chickens...thankfully they're all alive! (Kids and chickens!) I can't believe how much growth can happen with chicks in just 8 days!! I can completely distinguish cockerels from pullets with the Frisian Gulls, and one of the Silverudd's Blues I put in the bachelor pad is a bachelorette instead!! I will have to wait until tonight and put her in the correct pen!!
Anyway, here's a pic from our adventure!
