what do you use then all the old timers i know always used newspaper when they have hatched baby chicks and they turned out fine? thanks
The first few days, usually paper towels or other absorbent, but flat with traction material (some folks use puppy "puddle pads"). After a few days, I switch to pine shavings.
eta: I just saw WV and North Texas answered already. I'm a little slow on the uptake tonight! (What's new?!) :)

Thanks, i would probably have the front walls up but i had some varmint eat half my garden so i was trying to deal with that.

Ugh!! I have a very small garden/raised bed this year with only a few tomato plants and had some pepper plants that the rabbits ate very early on. The deer chewed one tomato plant that they could reach easily. My cherry and tommy toe tomatoes have done great, but the big tomatoes have been slow. Yesterday I noticed several that would be within a couple days of picking.... until this morning, the deer found them too. :he

I had a lovely garden last year... this year I used my fenced off garden as a grow out "play pen" so there is nothing in there - but chickens!! Next year? We shall see.

I spent the morning with a lady who bought some of my barnyard mix eggs (which are selling almost as fast as my girls can lay them - go figure). I think I convinced her to become a byc member - I like this place, plus I've learned a ton being on here - and she's incubating for the first time so she really must join - right??!!
