Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

Hubby took an old steel desk, welded some feet and braces on it, cut a hole in the top to fit a deep sink we picked up new stainless steel, but 2nd hand for super cheap from someone that changed remodeling plans. He ordered food safe sealer sorta like a rhino liner, to seal the table from everything and make it uber easy to clean. Can't wait til its done. It will have a huge cutting surface also.

My 15 broilers arrived on Friday. I think they are all red and black broilers...the hatchery said the cx hatch was dismal, but I guess I misunderstood--I thought I'd get a couple of regular CX, but looks like they are all red/black broilers. They shipped 16, one arrived dead, and one died the first day. Both black. A couple more of the black ones look weak as well.

The Ecoglow heater is....AWESOME. Holy moly. So far, the best money I've spent on chickens yet. But, it only had 2 days of use. When the chicks came, I put 6 under my broody hen. She took to them instantly. The rest were in a separate brooder with the ecoglow. The chicks with a mama...hardly any peeping. Super happy. The chicks under the ecoglow were more quiet than any chicks I've had in the past, but still peeped more than the chicks with a mama. Yesterday, I finished my outdoor brooder, and stuck ALL 14 chicks under the hen. Happy, happy chicks. It got down to 32 last night, and I check on the mama hen a few times...every chick is under her. Somehow. Mama is a Polish/silkie mix, so it's not like she's a big chicken.

My littlest dog, Buddy, wandered a little too close to the chicks yesterday. Mama bolted from the brooder (I was taking pictures with the door open) and laid my poor dog flat. His face is totally swollen and messed up this morning. Poor thing. He didn't know what hit him. He's not extremely healthy to begin with--valley fever that's not responding well to meds--and I hope this isn't going to turn into another $$$ vet visit. I plied him with antibiotic eye cream, rimadyl, and tramadol this morning, so he should be feeling much better!

Angelicisi, I think your chicks will be fine outdoors now. They are big enough to be producing a lot of heat! I wonder if Crook, when she/he is big enough, might make a tasty Cornish game hen. I loved how friendly the CX were!

I agree, EcoGlow = awesome!!

Brinsea was so kind to send me two of the 50 chick brooders after the fire and let me hold a contest and giveaway for a 20 chick brooder. Prior to that I bought 4 of the smaller units.

Whoa, angelisci, y'all are getting serious! I love the plucker and the new processing table. The little potting bench/garden sink/processing station (also now brooder!) works well for the small amount of processing I have to do, but wouldn't be adequate for big #s of birds.

Mama hen and her 14 babies are still doing great. Haven't had them on heat since I moved them outside (day 2). Almost every night has gotten down to freezing, so I just cover up the front of the brooder with blankets and the hen does the rest. All the chicks are growing well, except the little black runt I expected to lose right away. Hanging in there and seems healthy, but looks like a 3-day old rather than a 1.5 week old chick. These broilers seem like regular chicks to me. They've been on FF since the start. I think by this weekend I'll move them to the A-frame grow out pen. It's been totally secured to prevent whatever got the last set from getting any chickens, ever again.

My little dog...well, I had the poor thing on antibiotics for 2 days and his face was getting worse and worse. Took him to the vet, and had to have his face drained. Now, apparently, there's some worry that the skin around the swelling has died and he may need a freaking skin graft. I mentioned in a different thread that keeping chickens sure is an expensive hobby...

Did I post a picture of my new brooder set up? Here it is. Under the green board on top (under the black trays) is an old stainless steel double sink. Oh, featured is the little dog, checking out the brooder just before I added mom and the chicks. I think the brooder is about 4'x2.5'. Getting a little cramped in there with mama hen.

Here is mom with the babies, about 3 days old? Right after this, the hapless dog walked by and bam, mayhem ensued. $$$ expensive chicken attack.

That's an awesome brooder/work station combo! Good job! Lovin that mamas doing it so well for you :) and that the god is at least physically recovering...may be awhile befi he mentally recovers lol

was it your dog that needed vet attention or a chicken?

Haha "nice guys finish last..."literally
They average 3.5 to 4lbs now.
So a man I know wants 5 live CX (one roo 4 hens) for a Chinese new year special dinner. No problem so long as I can single a group out and start restricting diets...so I go out to check on them and weigh them and pick out like 10 holdbacks (in case some just can't hold out til end of january lol. )

Our lil CX roosters already let the girls eat first (dummies) and at weigh in the girls weigh more on the same diet and same dawn til dusk free range lol doh. Slower to grow tho longer to live! Smart and polite lol

Here's a roo 3.75lbs

Here's a pullet 4.27lbs lol fatty
