That is just so extremely tacky!!!!! My gods Juliard!?! And she thinks nothing of your talent?!?! Earplugs!?!?! Has she NO CLUE - sorry HAD she no clue how impossible it is to get into Juliard let alone survive there? Dag girl you gots serious talent, people pay major bucks to hear people like you and she wears ear plugs!!
Sorry, I am just rolling over how stupid people must have thought she was.......
Me too! Juliard is very difficult to get in as I heard from my tenor friend....very very difficult. Only the BEST would enter........
As for MIL, its stupid, has no taste in what you are singing...sorry I do not know what Oratorio is...is it a range of voice?
The best definition of Oratorio is from the Encyclopedia Brittanica: a large-scale musical composition on a sacred or semisacred subject, for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra. An oratorios text is usually based on scripture, and the narration necessary to move from scene to scene is supplied by recitatives sung by various voices to prepare the way for airs and choruses.
If you've ever listened to the entire (two hours) of Handel's Messiah, you've heard an Oratorio
Some of what I've done (as far as solo work in an Oratorio):
Verdi's Requiem
Mozart Requiem
Handel's Messiah (of course!)
Beethoven's Misse Solemnes (University performance here in Tampa).
Bach Cantatas (#131 being my favorite!!!!)
Mahler's Kindertotenlieder (don't look it up - you'll be sorry!)
I have done many pieces from many operas, but only performed in one opera (Carmen, Bizet). It was required learning (of course), and an important part of my education...it just wasn't my "thing".
Anyway...much of this may sound really foreign, but you get the idea. If we could sit, talk, and listen - much of this music would become loved by many...
I am a Mezzo-Soprano....not a soprano and not an alto (there are many types of sopranos & altos). Really what dictates what "range of voice," as you say, is not the range of notes you can sing (although that's a part of it), but the timbre (color and "sound" of your voice). My voice tends to have a rich, dark quality to it....I always have to work to "brighten" the sound.
OK...I have hi-jacked someone elses thread! I'm sorry!
ETA: Oh my goodness!! Please fix the spelling for Juilliard in my posts!!! My husband saw this and has been teasing me ALL NIGHT!!!! All I can say is it is POSSIBLE alcohol was involved...I was: TWI (typing while intoxicated!!!!). Boy! There will be no mercy tonight!
