In my mind, if you want to shoot a gun, you need to pull the trigger each time a bullet comes out. Then there are the guns that you just hold the trigger and the bullets keep coming out until you let go. These are guns designed to essentially kill people at random, as there really is no way to keep them perfectly on target while they are firing.

I've yet to hear anyone give me a good reason why they need to own such a weapon. Frankly, I'm hard pressed to even justify them for military purposes.

If you intend to have a gun, you better be able to reasonably control where each and every bullet ends up. If you can't, you have no business having the gun.

I don't really think civilians need to own long-distance sniper rifles, and I am perfectly happy with a blanket ban on anyone owning an automatic weapon.

Glad your not the only voter!

Can you give me a good reason why you should have a long-distance sniper rifle (read - mile or so range) or an automatic weapon? If you can, I'll happily change my mind on the subject.

'They are cool' is not a good reason.

Actually it is illegal for normal civilians to own automatic rifles!!! As far as long distance sniper rifles, beefed m1's and British rifles were used for years and years... those are .303 and .308 which is also a very common hunting round for medium sized game including deer.

Now if you are saying a .50 BMG made by armalite or barret... well the price alone is going to discourage even gun enthusiasts. Most people would seriously hurt themselves if they fired one without any training. That is a huge bullet!!!!! Most civilians don't need a rifle that can accurately reach out and hit a target close to 1200 meters away. But if you want to blow between 6,000 and 10,000 on a gun like that...

Last I checked, the rounds were between $5 and 10$ each for a six pack.

I'll give you one example for the .50 BMG I was talking about.. My cousin uses it on his ranch in Western Texas hunting feral hogs and Javelina. Not a critter you want even close to you.

See that's the whole thing. I don't have to justify to anyone WHY I do anything I do. I live in a FREE country, as do you. You have your opinion. I have my SKS and my opinion. I owe you NOTHING!!! I don't care if you don't agree with me. Many don't, and that my friend is the only say you have in my life. I am not trying to influence anybody. What are YOU doing?

I know. And I support that. I also think abnormal civilians shouldn't own them.

But if the game you are shooting at is a mile or so away, you need to rethink your hunting techniques.

See, I don't think they should be able to own them even if they can afford them. I don't really think I trust anyone with the technology to take down a plane at will. Sadly, crazy people are often able to come by large amounts of money.

Actually she may not know the use. Not all folks are familiar enough with guns to match the right tool for the job. Now I agree that I don't want any regular ole gang banger getting automatic weapons tho..

You don't need a big gun to do so. Now dangerous game, or game that is a pest like feral hogs/javelinas that would rather kill you than let you get close.. Yeah, I know folks who use big guns on them. Their motto is reach out and crush someone.

Shooting is sport like anything else, and extreme distance is part of it. Having the right tool for the job is part of the process.

Gang bangers have more access than I do. Black market illegal weapons are a huge seller. I would rather abide by the law and get a legal gun. Oh, and as stated above several times. I assault deer not people, and they are tasty dead animals!!!!!
