So some back story:
We live out in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the woods. So I started putting a live trap out to catch any raccoons, etc in our area to get rid of. I caught a raccoon about a month ago, but nothing else until this morning.
So here's what happened:
When I went out to let the chickens out of their coop there was a cat in the live bait trap. I asked any of the neighbors that are remotely close to us, but nobody knows whose it is so I took it to the humane society in the closest town, thinking they would atleast spay it because they are always advertising that they do that. Well the lady there was completely rude to me. All I asked her was what I should do with it and she completely went off on me and was ranting about how they were full. I couldn't believe I was treated like that. And I'm the kind of person who just takes it and gets mad after the fact. You would have thought I asked her for her kidney.
End rant.

In their defense, they are usually overwhelmed. It's not a job I could do on a daily basis and stay sane. I'm not a fan, they are not terribly "humane" in many cases, despite their name. See if you have any private rescue organizations near you, they may be more willing to help, or direct you to where you can get some. There are many smaller, no-kill, private organizations that do very good work. But the majority of them are always at capacity. Where I live we have an organization that does feral cats exclusively, they spay or neuter them, find homes for the adoptable ones, and release the non-adoptable ones after they are fixed.

So did they end going ahead and taking it?
I rescued a bunch of puppies some years ago that had been dumped after a storm and were drowning in a ditch somewhere. I remember calling several shelters and they all said I had to PAY so much per puppy to drop them off :thnot to mention that they make it so hard for anyone to actually adopt a pet from one of those places these days, it's no wonder they are always full.
No good deed goes unpunished!

No they didn't take it. I have a friend who works near a feral cat rescue about 1 1/2 away, so she took it today and said she is gonna see if they will take it tomorrow. This is the same humane society I adooted my cat from and I donate to every year. The people have always been nice before, but I guess not today.
I don't have a problem putting down the critters around here, but not cats, unless it was actually attacking my chickens. But I haven't seen it on my game cams so I know it hasn't been bothering my chickens.

They do make it hard to adopt! I felt like I was trying to get a secret security clearance just trying to adopt my cat.

Here's a pic of the poor cat

Wow it's a pretty one. I hope your friend can get it a place to stay.

She is a sucker for kitties so worst case scenario she would probably take it to the vet and get it checked out and then keep it if it was ok.
If I had the money I would do that, but sadly I don't.
Last week at about 5am I heard my cat hissing and going on, atleast now I know what he was fighting with.

It is a very pretty cat. It was a bit skinny so I made sure it got food and water before I went to the humane society. I didn't check if it was a boy or a girl, because the poor thing was sooo scared and I didn't want to mess with it too much.
I suspect someone dumped it. I really do live in the middle of nowhere
