RANT Why do people take on pets/chickens/livestock???

I think that if you really think they are neglected, then you should call the authorities. I couldn't say if it is or isn't - I would have to see for myself. I also think you are making a mistake trying to "educate" this man or whatever. It sounds like there is a big cultural divide between you and he about how chickens are to be kept and its the sort of thing that can only be sorted out by the authorities if he is doing something wrong, otherwise if I were you, I would stay out of it.

IMO, This sounds like you and he don't have the same views on how chickens should be kept, end of story.

good for you for recognizing Lovey needed help.

I bet she's a million times happier now that she's not covered in poo! I certainly hope you can do whatever needs to be done to help get the remaining birds to a better environment. The guy said he didn't want them anymore, I don't see any issue with you taking Lovey or finding homes for the rest of the birds. good luck!

In fact, that silky looks like the picture of health. Sure she may have been a bit muddy, but what chicken doesn't ever get muddy in the middle of winter? ESPECIALLY silkies. Sorry. Birds can get by in a lot smaller of a coop. He is more humane than a lot.. Just because he leaves for work, doesn't mean he doesn't care for them. At least they have fresh air.

I say give her back, or at least offer to pay for her.

I have much worse neighbours to deal with.. Mine are trying to outlaw my chickens because of the possibility of future rodent problems.

If I read the post correctly, the guy said he didn't want them anymore and if the OP didn't take them, he would let the landlord deal with it. I would take that to mean that he pretty much gave them to her. She did leave a note for the landlord when she took the silky. If that is case, they are technically hers and the point is moot.

The only thing is that he said he paid for a neighbor to take care of them while he was gone, so if he doesn't want them, why did he pay someone to feed them? Unless he really didn't want to deal with getting rid of them until he got back home.

OP, I, personally, think it's great that you are looking out for them, but be careful. If he did tell you that you can have them, get it in writing. Do you know his address in India? Perhaps you can write him to make sure that he really is letting you have them.

We have had rain here for three days and guess what ! I have some dirty birds! The point is they are HIS birds
He could of told you to get rid of his birds out of anger because you wouldn't leave him alone and he was just tired of it.He may not really want to give his birds away.

After following this post, I am torn. I understand your plight completely. I am an animal lover. All animals. Period. Is my standard of care the same as my neighbors? no. I have neighbors that have pets and chickens and peacocks. the coop smells terrible, the eggs are covered in POO (they tried selling them to the local co-op, but even my small town turned them down)... but I am not their judge. If you had permission to do what you feel is best for the animals, then use the utmost care. You are stuck in an unfortunate situation that your willingness to help has gotten you into! I don't believe there is anything you have done that I would do differently. However my heart goes out to you because sometimes the heart and mind tend to war, and it can lead to some very sticky predicaments!!!
