Rant

We had ours taken out by a teenager over the summer, he drove off the side of the road and lost control. Luckily he wasn't hurt and landed in our front yard. Had he gone another 100' feet or so he would of ended up in our deep creek. We called county who came out, called his dad, who came out. The next day dad brought son back and he put up new post and a new mailbox w/numbers.

Three months later someone drives by, throws beer bottle out their window and it lands in my mailbox

I think they were aiming for my "Eggs 4 sale" sign and missed. So now I have another new mailbox. I had to pay for this one though

Yup, have your nephew build you one with bricks. That's what we did. We live in the country too and everyone else around us has smashed in mailboxes. Just last week we made the mistake of taking the garbage and recycle cans up the driveway in the dark. Well guess what when I left to take the kids to school I found our recycle can a 1/4 of a mile down the road in the ditch with 1/2 the recycle dumped out. Some dumb sob's thought that it would be funny to grab our can and let it fly down the hill. Needless to say we won't be taking the cans out until it's light again.

I haven't read the whole thread but I live on the down side of a curve - thank GOD! People come screeching down the street and the across the street from me has lost 6 mailboxes in 2 years due to reckless drivers. The last one was a month or so ago and the guy took our two mailboxes, ran through my next door neighbors fence and hit their truck before he took off. Thankfully he was kind enough to leave his license plate behind.

For some reason it seems almost illegal for them to get out of the vehicle. HAHAHA! Ours does get out if the post is next day or priority mail, but other than that they drive down the road one house at a time.

They do walk from house to house in the city were the houses are close together but out in the country if they tried going door to door it would take too long to deliver the mail. The houses out here are too far apart for someone to walk from house to house delivering the mail.

Luckily I've never had anyone mess with my mailbox...the mail box in down at the end of a lane that goes out to a county road....I suppose it's just not in a spot that would make it fun to mess with.

Yeah, people live far enough apart that a mail person often can't go door to door to get the mail out to everyone. Lots of times, in denser populated areas, mail people put mail into a wall of boxes. The one out here at where I am staying for school has about 150 mail boxes together in one spot so the mail person doesn't have to go door to door.

Two in five years...I lost two a year for almost 25 years! I finally started really beefing up my post by using a 6" x 6" treated railroad tie sunk in two bags of ready mix. My neighbor told me he saw the kid who batted it last. It didnʻt give an inch but he apparently fell out of the back of the pick-up truck from the shock.

Worst of all, if your box is in the least little state of disrepair, the mailman will refuse to deliver your mail until its fixed. I think the local hardware store owner was married to the postmaster and had a couple of teenage kids. Hmmmmm, might be a connection there!
