Rare South American Breeds including the Colloncas

My white Huastec rooster came out of the prettiest medium sized blue egg and my black Huastec hen lays a medium sized tan egg. She only laid about 10 eggs and went broody, but wouldn't stay on the nest, so they're in the incubator. Hopefully the next generation will be blue egg layers. They are just over a year old. They are such calm and observant birds...

Going into lockdown with the BQO... 19 of 26 purchased are alive and kicking!!!!! I am very happy with that rate. Now they just have to hatch...

It looks like it will be next year before I can order some of the Colloncas. I am working on my pens now but I am having to do some grading of the ground and laying of a foundation and some terracing to keep my soil in place so there won't be erosion problems. And I am doing the grading with a shovel, a pickax, a rake and garden fork. So it is going to take me some time. But I figure that doing it right is better than half doing something and then causing me to loose birds that I spent a lot (for me) of money on. Perhaps I will have enough space for some Sweet Potatoes or Hustatec as well.

Question: You mentioned that the South American breeds are cold hardy but how are they in the heat. I am in that borderline area of TN that can have cold winters and really hot summers too. Lately (the last 3 years) we have been getting mild winters and fairly mild summers. But back in 2006 we had a hellacious drought and were getting temperatures of 110˚F. And that didn't include the heat index.

Can you post pictures of the eggs?

Yes!

Alas, all the thyme I have growing doesn't seem to be helping me get to all the things I need to.

Good luck I hope you get a good hatch. I am going to try some more, 19 out of 26 sounds like a great rate. Do you have any advice on getting that good of eggs going into lockdown temps or humidity and kind of incubator . I would love some advice I am going to keep trying with these breeds until I get enough to hatch my own. Have a great day and good luck
