Rattlesnake!

Rattlesnake and my husband's size 11 foot

Don't think if you live in "town" that predators aren't around. While this snake was not after my chickens, it serves to illustrate the fact that animals roam your streets and it isn't just cats and dogs. This rattlesnake was killed across the street from our house and we live 3 blocks from city hall. It was three and a half feet long and had 13 rattles. If it struck a child, it would have been very serious.

Yea people have no clue what lurks around especialy at night, my Grandpa lived in down town Port Arthur and his dog kept getting snake bit, he finely watched the dog and found it trying to get to the snakes behind his garage under some stacked tin, there were a whole nest of copper heads.

Yes, yes, I know! The natural world is filled with perils for us humans. Not only snakes but scorpions, tarantulas and other spiders, mosquitoes, (We're in the midst of a West Nile Virus "epidemic" here.) bees, (Yes, bees have a venom that is poisonous.) wasps, Blister Beetles, Puss Caterpillars (aka Asp Caterpillars) centipedes, the Gaff Top Sail Catfish, sting rays, Portuguese Man-O-War and that's just here in Texas.

The thing to remember is that with the exception of two creatures mentioned above (tall tales not withstanding) none aggressively seek out us with the intention of doing us harm. What are those two? The mosquito and man! As to the rest, if you leave them alone they will leave you alone. Yes, I have been bitten by a rattle snake, but it was my own stupidity, not the snake's aggressiveness that caused it. It felt threatened by my actions therefore...

Yes, there are lots of things to worry about, if we choose to, such as "Watch out for elephants in case a circus comes to town!" This particular quote comes from Daisy Duck's (Apropos for BYC I think.

) warning to Donald while she was backseat driving. (Saw it in a comic book when I was a small boy, and it stuck.

)

My point is that one shouldn't worry about such things. Just be aware of your surroundings.

I don't kill snakes, my dogs and cats do if they catch them in the safe area because it is so open and debree free with the exception of the trees that they are easly caught when going to the ponds for water, i hate that it happens but can not fault my dogs for doing their job, i mean they do not know a copperhead from a corn snake.

I tend to favor letting things be too. It seems people for the most part think all snakes must die, without understanding how crucial their existence is to the natural balance. I understand this was in town but was relocation not an option?

And to think I get scared when I see a black snake in my yard!

I never kill them but I will 'shu' them away in a not so nice manor.

We had a Hog-nosed Snake, about 4' long living in what we refer to as "the basement" for several years until the landlord (city boy) saw it one day and went berserk. He hired someone to get rid of it over our objections. You can guess the result. We were overrun with mice almost immediately.

Now that i think about it, we have moles in my front yard(or at least did) and we have scorpions(sometimes) and the cats. I have also seen a very very low slow flying hawk but it is not getting in my cage.
