Raw goat's milk RAVE

I lived on a farm for the bulk of my childhood and the first milk animals we had were goats. Mom and Dad switched to cows for some reason after a few years and got rid of the goats. My brother and I were raised first on raw goats milk and then on raw cow milk. He had food allergies and as a baby had to have special formula due to lactose intolerence and I had immune problems to the point that my parents HAD to keep a close eye on me when I got sick.
Now Mom wants me to go get her some milk goats. I gotta fix the pasture fences first. And figure out how the heck a 69 year old with health problems is going to milk a goat. But it will be easier on her than a big ole cow.

I wouldn't keep it longer than a week, and I sniff test anything older than a day old. If you hand milk, the milk has potential to get contaminated and have an off odor or taste which your nose can usually detect. I've not had it happen with my goat's milk, but I had raw milk from another farm that had a taint once (I know the people who milk, they are careful but not as careful as I am).

Anyway, the milk is never around that long. The day's extra gets turned into curds for the chickens so we don't end up with too many milk bottles in the fridge. Lots of protein and calcium for them. Then we drink the freshest milk & have extra to share with friends.

It's a perfect system for our small family.

we go thru ours pretty fast also - and b/c we are milking we get lots and lots every day! what we dont use, or after a day or two dont use for cheese, we either freeze or give to the hens. and yes hens love love love whey also

and its a fun joke:

me: hey honey - whey!
DH: no way!
me: whey!

it just keeps getting funnier and funnier. ok for us.

Speaking of cheesey & happy things:

I ordered my cheese making stuff today

Also have my 2nd batch of yogurt incubating. First batch (w/ cow milk) didn't work right - whey separated? It was gross, but I had made a mistake with it so it's probably my own fault. Hopefully this one goes better.

I put an add on craigslist today. Maybe I will get someone one to sell a little bit of raw milk. I am not even being particular. Cow goat.... just raw.

super on the cheese stuff! good for you!!

do you have a yogurt maker or are you doing a heating pad, insulated thermos, crock pot or some other kinda thing????

good luck, obsessed. in my state you cant sell raw milk and anyone who has it is VERY leery of selling. hopefully this will change.

say - why dontcha just get a goat
