So then, people giving away eggs or selling them cheaper than yours are NOT putting you out of business after all, just cutting into your potentially-larger profits?

Not, mind you, that I'm against anyone making a profit if the market is naturally sufficient produce one.

But under the circumstances here, hm.

Pat, who thinks it'd be better if everyone just raised their own eggs in the first place (everyone who can, that is, and gave the extras or sold them at-cost to those who can't).

And the majority of us aren't even anywhere near ewesfullchicks and have no impact whatsoever on ewesfullchicks unless ewesfullchicks plans on shipping nation wide and world wide!

I have packing peanuts that have to be the most friendly of any of my chickens. It is like they know what is coming and want to soften me up. It is not going to be easy doing the deed. I worked in a slaughter house when young and my job was mostly doing the deed, but that is a lot different when you get close to the animal.

I plan on raising silkies too and they need a lot of culling to be uniform, again a very loving bird that is going to be difficult. Maybe you could trade your birds for some chicks. Yes they will be processed but at least you do not have to do it.

I cant do it; not give them away nor cull them... they're my pets. They'll be alive until they die of natural causes or something gets them in nature. Just the way I am

Sure, crafters -- like, if you are trying to make money selling quilts, and I am the proverbial granny who does it for fun and charges two dollars apiece, you might find a lot of your potential clientele heading my way, and be annoyed

Not just crafters either. My DH does photography at horse trials on summer weekends, just for fun, and early in his 'career' doing it, he was apparently dressed down rather briskly by a professional photographer for undercutting her prices.

To me, though, if people are happy enough with quiltin' granny's product (or at least product-to-price ratio), and with amateur photographers' for-fun efforts, then that may just be tellin' you that there isn't ROOM in the local market for someone to make a living off of it. Unless they can think of a different way of doing it that would be more profitable.

Not all arbitrary 'niches' are profitable businesses, you know?

JMHO,

Pat

The same could be said for most of the stuff you buy at Walmart and other big box stores. Most of it is shipped in from China, etc.

We need to start buying American and supporting SMALLER mom/pop stores. If we don't it only hurts US in the long run.

This I agree with, but many products are just not available here even at higher prices. Most of our woes can be traced to cheap products from overseas. While we have enjoyed cheap TVs, furniture and other items it has finally caught up to us. I personally will not buy or replace a item until it breaks and I can't fix it. Mostly because I don't want to buy foreign. And cheap products when they do break end up in the landfill. Shame the art of appliance repair has ended up on boot hill.

You have to admit it is sad though that those giant Wal-Mart farms buy everything food, housing, egg cartons in massive bulk and slowly we have nothing but stinky massive polluting mega farms. That goes the same for pigs, beef. The only ones that don't bother me are the catfish. I have my roosters butchered, put them in the freezer, same for old hens but they have had the best life a chicken can have. I don't feel bad about it, in ziplocs they all look the same.
I really wish Tyson,Purdue etc.. would at least take the nutrient rich poultry litter and heat houses, run vehicles or something with it rather than pollute our waterways.

The only thing I'd like to add is that ewesfulchicks is a new member...I don't know about y'all, but when a new member comes on board and early on, begins to ruffle feathers...that just doens't sit well with me. Maybe it's just me, though.
