My problems are

1) chicks all leave hatchery 100% healthy I am sure of that!
2) At about 1 week old some of the chicks start "dropping dead"
3) I am sure its "cocci" and have treated with corrid and sulmet, Apple Cider Vinager (one or the other not both) proper light, 90 estimated degreees fresh water, fresh bedding, medicated chick starter.....

This happens in every case. I have washed the bedding area and even started new "brooders" with lights... this carries over from the infected pen to the pens with non infected chicks.

Is there just a % that will die anyway? I wait until chicks are fully feathered and place them in the outdoor covered run with few losses from there. Out of 100 chicks about 80 make it to the outside pen. Is this just the season? WHAT am I doing wrong? I really need your assistance and I'll do what is needed to save the chicks. is this cocci? I have not other idea.... the sysmptoms are the same..... all are fine. A few get "legarthic" hours later they are dead.....

Please help

Several of us have suggested before, but you don't seem to want to believe us when it seems like it's probably over medicating.....and too much heat. Giving meds when you don't know what you're treating is as bad as not giving anything at all. Why do you think it's cocci? I've never in all my years of having chickens had to give meds to chicks.

No, I don't consider any % dying as normal.

One of my friends was having this problem. He was losing 50% of his chicks no matter where he got them. I suggested letting me brood his last 2 orders of 50 each. None of them died. I think he was panicking and trying to do too much to care for them, and overdoing it.

Do not concern yourself... I have already read your opinion. I have used EITHER E-I-T-H-E-R medicated feed, corid or apple cider vinager. I'll continue to work on this thank you for your generous concern......

Pine shavings , or a little dry fresh hay for bedding, normal heat lamp... and unknown reason for chicks dying. a few pe day AFTER starting fresh pens and with one or the other meds. I really wish I knew...
Mrs. Turbo :

what kind of bedding are you using?

Area size of 6 ft x 6 ft sq for about 30/50 chicks at a time.... this seems like plenty of room

Hi!

I would like to help you out if i can.

I have some questions - mostly to rule out what probably isn't the answer.

I'm not an expert, but sometimes i have a knack for narrowing things down.

1. How many times has this happened?

2. You mentioned 80 out of 100 chicks. Are these meat birds? If not, any particular breed?

3. Are you getting them from the hatchery at a day-old (or thereabouts)?

4. Have you always gotten them from the same place?

5. What do they eat? Are they getting any treats?

6. You said they have all the symptoms of coccidiosis. Does that include bloody droppings?

Like i said, i'm no expert, but sometimes i have a knack for narrowing things down, and i will research the dickens out of this to help you find the answer if you will let me. I know you must be very frustrated with so many losses. I do not think that level of losses is anything near normal. Let's figure it out.
