AHHH I get to keep the Orp babies!!! The guy was hatching them for a friend who wants the roosters, so he said I could have them since he has plenty. I get to raise them and keep the girls for FREE and will return the roosters to the lady working on the project! I'm praying the splash ends up a female!
Wow, that's a heap of eggs!I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only person that has about 60 standard size chickens. I collect 40-45 eggs a day from my standard chickens and I give them away to anyone I know who wants them. I especially like to give them to people with children because they are a good healthy food with lots of protein.
Wow, that's a heap of eggs!
At our early count of the 18 young birds we have (spread over 3 hatches) we think we will end up with about 12 hens. I think we will have more eggs than we can eat. A fair amount will be passed over the fence for 'neighbor bribes', family and kids school mums.
All else, if we still have too many one week we can visit the local church as they give out food baskets weekly. I am not a religious kind of guy but I certainly like the idea of helping those that could do with a hand.
If we had more property, then we would have more birds!
And I've got a family of five! You'd think we'd eat enough to put a dent in all the eggs we collect but no. Not really. We get a dozen eggs every other day or so. We can only eat so many. Yeah, pretty sad when you can't even give them away.
I have this problem and I only have 11 laying hens right now. I just hatched 22 chickens, some of which I will add to my laying flock too. So... I have 12 dozen eggs in the fridge. Clearly I've made a mistake. Keeping chickens for eggs is a social project. You have to know people and have friends... who aren't on chicken forums... I guess. LOL. All of my family is 3hr drive away and we're also not religious so we don't have a church community to share with. Our neighbors all seem to be set with other local egg farms that were established before we moved here a year ago. So we're out of luck. I can't sell them! So I'm going to take some to a local food bank next week. But even then... they have to relabel them to make them look like they're from a big farm for legal reasons so it's all kind of shifty.
Dunno what's going to happen after my chicks grow up and start laying. I guess I'll rely on the tax deductions from the donations, lol. I'm in deep. Definitely need therapy for my obsession.
