Ready Set Hatch! Set 3/17 Hatch 4/7 - ready now! Hatch-Along

Day 5.5. Five and a half days. I very quickly grabbed an egg from each corner of my incubator and candled them. Three of the four showed nice veining and one showed nothing yet. I mainly wanted to see that my coolest area was warm enough to develop them and it seems to be fine. The one with no veins was one of the silkies :( One bluebell looked good, and the other two were from my own hens - yay! My young roosters are doing good!

We have no will power lol
And it's still early the silky may b just fine :)

Pretty quiet day.

Last night I converted my still air into a fan forced and ran it over night. been at 72% humidity and 37.5C pretty much all day.

Happy to use that for the first part of our staggered hatch.

My DIY 'bator is working well too.

For us metric folk,

For those that prefer the 'funny' way hahaha

Exactly where I want it and nice and steady.

I went down to shut the coop and found two banties sitting on nests! I'm going to let one of them ride it out and the other I'm going to break because she's a bit wild and I don't want feral chicks :)

Good job on the modification Ben! That should work great for hatching...and for incubating twice as many next time!
I'm really looking forward to candling all the eggs on day 7, tomorrow morning. Whoohoo! I didn't weigh mine beforehand, I don't have a good scale for that so I will just compare the air cells. When I candled the four sample eggs yesterday I chose light colored ones so I could just look with the flashlight. Tomorrow I will turn the hallway bath into my candling workshop with the slide projector and get a good look into all of them.

It's my wife's birthday today, we went out to a steak house for dinner. That distracted me long enough to keep m hands out.

We are both keen to sit down and go over all 18 tomorrow night. The Araucana are 3 days behind, so we need to be very gentle with them, but we should get an early peek on progress. Will see about photo's, not sure how they will turn out.

Well I had to move my little broody Jap banty today. I have a cage that I move my sitting hens to when they are about a week from hatching. I use hooded cat litter boxes for nests so it makes it easy to move the whole nest when ready. And a cage to themselves gives them privacy and keeps the bitties safe after they hatch. Well anyhoooo, i had to move her early because she started stressing out because there was a nest of eggs right beside her in another litter box. She is wanting to sit on both!!! She has been sitting on her original nest for 4 days. She just started this today. So i put her back on her original nest and relocated her. I'm not worried about other nest because half of the eggs belong to my other little Jap and she always goes broody when she finishes laying. Just another day in the CHICKEN DRAMA!!!!
