I love my recent roosters! Silkie and a Polish bantam.
They are both really friendly and sweet!
They definitely make the hens feel safer and help keep things in line.

My old rooster was mean ._. but i will admit that he did sacrifice himself when a raccoon broke into the coop.
He saved all of my hens and he was very good to them..

Another time, the neighbors dog got into my yard and he escorted all the hens out down the street to get away, then lead them back home

If you watch your flock while they're free ranging, the rooster will watch while the hens eat. He patrols the area checking on the hens, calls them if he finds a goodie, and rounds up straying hens. My roos eat when the hens return to the yard for their afternoon siesta. I've lost two good roos to coyotes. Two distracted the coyote and were taken and one, the silkie, actually flew into the coyote's face. The silkie lived and all three coyotes did not.

Oh my goodness! I finally thought of a reason to keep a roo around that hasn't been mentioned yet! Keep him for the rooster feathers, they're super popular right now and you could make a killing selling them to salons.

Also, you'll get to

at your bare-butt roos

Where can I find all yours guys roos? We have had 3 so far. 2 had to go because they were to noisy and we live in a neighborhood. The silkie got to stay. He is sweet only to my female silkie. He just wants to mate with the other hens. But I will say I love watching him with my silkie hen. He always stays close to her and when she isn't running away (when hes trying to mate) from him she does seem to feel safer with him. They are ALWAYS together. Its so sweet.

I would try to keep at least one roo and see how it goes!

I did NOT want a Roo. Then I accidentally ended up with one. Sadly he died early but he was so good I purposely bought another about the same age. He has been wonderful. He keeps the ladies in line and warns of possible predators. He is very protective of 'his girls.'

I do not breed chickens, he is there for flock security and peace.

Reasons for a GOOD roo, they must be good if not dont bother keepign them.

My roo leads the hens out of the coop in the mornings when i let them out, if one gets a little lost in the run. (She is a funny bird) he will go right in and get her. Then mets up with the other hens.

He takes them out the dig up bugs in the dirt.

Takes them for dust bathes.

Takes them tot he treat window when it gets opened. (my mom got them started on that, they are as bad as the pony)

Keeps them safe from the chicken eatting bunny rabbits.

And while they peck at the gorund looking for bugs or just grazing he watchs all the time.

Last but not least he takes them all to bed at dusk.

I never thought i get stuck with another rooster. The two i was given were rotten birds and mean roos. My good baby bird Griffin was a keeper. I picked him out of four others i got stuck with. Gave all the others up and kept him. He is a gentlemen to his girls.

# 1 reason, to warn the hens of a predator.

Up until 3 months ago, I had 2 roosters. I had to get rid of them because my a-- h---- neighbor complained. Yesterday, a hawk took one of my 4 month old pullets. She was the sweetest girl I had. I am devastated and ticked at the same time. I know if I still had my roosters, she would be alive. They were very alert and great protectors. If you can have roosters where you live, I think, you would be foolish not to.

I will always have roosters. Today my young adult White Rock rooster rushed to defend the young hens and babies that adored him and was killed by a nasty hawk that turned it's fury on him. He did his job bravely and with no hesitation and I will miss him very much.

Over the years there have been other roosters here that courageously stood ground and fought battles they had no chance of winning thus saving their flock...and they too will never be forgotten and always appreciated.
