Recessive white gene in my bbs silkie pen? Pics of chicks!

Thanks so much Tammy. I just love to learn about the silkie breed and the genetics behind colors fascinate me. If I wasn't prepared for some of the tough answers I would never have posted this thread.

Thanks again!

Here is a picture of the 2 chicks I posted about before some may have seen it before.

They are getting their wing feathers in and they are solid white. These either came from my black pen or gray pen.

Thanks so much for your support! Do you want a partial refund for the eggs I sent you? I want to be fair with all my customers that I sold these eggs too. I am planning on breeding these or have someone continue this project for me.
****thank you Hanna, but no, theres no need I was happy to help you by being your first egg selling customer and I told you i'd be happy to help you in any way possible and in the process you gave me some beautiful babies it's no biggie honestly!

I agree. I don't think that I am trying to get into the whole top of the line breeding thing and all but if I do breed I would like it to be quality. So now I'm trying to decide what to do since I only have two coops/pens that can be used for silkies. I guess one is going to be my "pet" pen. I'm still trying to figure out what I have in the other 9 silkies. I'll be posting a thread soon with pics of my black girls and boys so maybe you all can help me decide which ones to keep. Please watch for it.

Hannah, I'm sorry that this has happened to your breeding program. I hope that you find out where the problem is coming from.

I actually find this quite interesting.

I'm actually excited how things turn out. It looks like you have a pair so if you keep them seperate and breed from them when they are old enough I would love to see what color chicks they throw.

Post pictures of your blacks and blues. I love seeing silkies.

I know this discussion was awhile ago but I need clarification. I know Nikki specifically said that whites that are greyish with the wrong color beak and red faces should not be bred. What if the bird was another color and had a reddish colored face then would you breed it? I get confused because some people say to breed one bird to another for certain characteristics you want to enhance. So if you bred a silkie with a reddish face to one with a darker face because the one with the redder face had the type you wanted then would that be wrong to do?

I have had an APA judge tell me that breeding is about knowing what birds to put together to give you the BEST birds. He said that it doesn't have to be a SQ with SQ.

I understand using the best birds possible with the best birds possible and NOT breeding junk in. Can someone just explain the reddish face thing??

I also would like some clarification on 2 things.

So, you should be going for the silver & recessive white?

It is pretty well known that birds which have both silver & recessive white (&/or dominant white) are a cleaner brighter white.

Not just white to white? I think my roo has gold, b/c he has a little yellowing in him. Am I correct to say this? And this is NOT good, correct?

Also....
Black x Black = 100% Black

Black x Blue = 50% Black, 50% Blue

Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black and 25% Splash

Splash x Black = 100% Blue

Splash x Blue = 50% Splash and 50% Blue

Splash x Splash = 100% Splash

Which one is the roo? The first color? Or...does it make a difference?

And this is for ALL b/b/s?

Blue is not a sex-linked gene, so it does not make a difference which parent is which colour.

Even whites with the silver gene can get discoloured feathers, athough in general they have less of an issue than whites carrying gold. Yes, brassiness, stained and sunburned feathers are considered to be poorer conditioning.

wow. confused on all this.
I have 2 perfect - pure white. nice combs from dark blue partridge eggs purchased elsewhere.

I will post pics later.

They are 2 months though and looking BEAUTIFUL!
