Wow,

Those are great ideas! I will get whatever wattage it takes to heat up my brooder then. My avg. room temp @ night is 65F and daytime is about 80F when its sunny out. Not too bad so I am going to start with 100W first : )

I will do RED!

As for the BLACKLIGHT situation, I don't think its the BEST idea even though it might appear cool because in order for blacklight to work, it must emit UV light and that, in return might damage the chicks' eyes and thats a risk I don't plan to test out myself : )

I got the red bulb

.

Only 100W but it works GREAT! Its mounted about 6 inches off the ground and its seems @ night, they sleep around the light...3-4 inches away from the light fixture but somehow by morning, they are in the far corners of the brooder, yet, those areas are only 70F. I was worried they died but they seem to be all alert and eatting once the shade in my room is up.

What does that mean...? I don't know how they can stand 70-75F...

I don't know. My 6 week olds left the heated area to roost at night, it was their own decision. The heat is there, they just don't want to use it. It gets around 45 at night here. I figure, it's not up to me to tell them how hot or cold they are. I think they can figure it out.

We keep our house pretty warm and they are in our bathroom.
With heater vent.
Today I raised the light and I hope they stay warm. 2 weeks old on Monday.

Does anyone think I should lower the light at night?

Yeah,

I believe chicks are smart enough to know when they are hot, when they are cold. Its actually innate in them.

Anyhow, I am still worried though because when they are asleep, they don't move around much so that place that they feel asleep at could get cold @ night, who knows?

Nevertheless, they are running around and eatting all day today and aren't chirping much so I guess the temp must be "JUST RIGHT" then.

Yeah?

Just a thought... Be sure to always have an extra light bulb on hand in case one goes out and the stores are closed. They don't seem to last as long as they say on the box!!!

Great idea!

I went ahead and did that to

So now...I am ready. Today is their 5th day and boy do they eat a LOT! Lol.
Its easier to notice now since I am the one feeding them and they are the ones eating it, not their moms too (in the other case) so I know their appetite. Lol

It helps doesn't it? Lol. Yeah, the first few nights were terrible because it was the first time I had chicks in my room. Chicks as in chickens that is
HAHA!

Anyways, yeah, the red light does sooth them down and allow them to sleep. Sometimes one odd one is crazy though, and starts chirping all loud. Once I heard one ran over and pushed the noisy fella and said "Shhhh! Tommy is sleeping, lets not bother him or we won't get fed tomorrow" Lol
Woke up and found out I was only dreaming or else I woulda FREAKED OUT!
