Red Laced Cornish X and project talk (pics p. 8)

A.T. Hagan :

Finally got a chance for some better photos of the Dark Cornish.

The one on the right is the largest cockerel and so far the one I think I'm going to breed with.

A couple of the pullets:

Haven't found any that I'm wanting to cull yet though the smaller of the cockerels probably won't be used for breeding.

Lookin' good A. T.. They shouldn't have any trouble live breeding, yet plenty meaty to set a very nice looking bird on the table. IMO they should serve you well as a self-sustaining flock to feed a family through thick or thin. Looking forward to the processing results of those you cull.

On purebreds, all 4 LF varieties recognized by the APA are judged by the same exact standard except for color. Based only on the pictures I see of hatchery Cornish , and having owned some hatchery sourced WLRCs myself; the DCs seem to be deeper bodied, more meaty, and larger framed. I really would like to work with some good breeder sourced Whites for three reasons; they are rare, there is no pattern to try to get right [allowing me to concentrate on form], and they make a cleaner looking bird when processed. Buff is the fourth color that the LF come in, and I've yet to see one, but it takes real dedication to breed the color right.

I have found a buff cornish breeder of about 30 years-- but it lead to a dispersal after his death.. and a dead end in trying to find the new owner. I had a name and phone number, left a message... and did not hear back...

Well, might go north tomorrow and run the chicks I hatched for Dad up to him. Thought I would take some photos. These guys are about eight weeks old.

The whites, the three with the black bands are the pure Cornish. The other five whites are out of the blue laced red, or blue project pens.

The non banded cockerel to the left on the above photo I think has some potential.

This project pullet has a single feather stub on each leg, you can kind of see it about 3/4 the way up on the right leg.

The blue cockerel with a blue laced red cockerel that might have potential.

A splash laced red, sporting a cushion comb.
