Man o man what i would give to find a crows nest. I'll tell ya straight up, if i ever do, at least one o' them youngins will become a house pet. I have a freind in joisey that found an injured youngin once and healed it up and for years that crow (eddy) went everywhere he went. He worked a garbage truck fer a couple o' years and eddy was in that truck with him every day. When eddy was about 4 y/o he jist decided it was time to go and off he flew.
This explains some things to me. We have hawks (red tails red shoulders) and I have been so thankful that they hadn't gotten any chickens. Now I am thinking about the crows and bluejays I also see around here.
And JimnJanet, if you decide to rob a crow's nest, please get someone to video it. I wanna see.
When I was a kid, all the farmer's knew us kids would take in injured wild animals. We got a baby crow that had fallen out of the nest, and fed him by hand. He followed us everywhere. He stayed with us about a year, then one day flew off and never returned. They are neat pets.

If you let them free range or have open top coop, and you have red tails around you will have a loss or two over the years, (most likely when you are standing very close to your flock :|) ask me how i know
You can try deterrent measures such as cd's hanging on some twine, scare crows, music ect..
I lost my favorite chicken to the nasty hawk around here. He was so brazen that I got inches from him before he took to a low branch. He even buzzed me while I was scooping her up. It took my husband lots of fast talking to keep me from shooting it. I hate those hawks!!!
However, I started shooting off bottle rockets at it. I haven't seen him fly low for a while, but I also house my goats with the chickens now and I think they protect them. The crows and the owls have been battling it out pretty seriously so who knows maybe he wants to stay out of the war zone.
Good luck!
I took my babies out in the yard for the first time yesterday and a hawk swooped down and almost took them right out of my lap it scared me asbad as it did the chicks :|
I actually think it would be cool to witness in a "nature in action" sort of way
R U Sick? I saw it all too close and not fun! Watch animal planet or some nature program! Our chickens are domesticated and can not or don't know how to protect themselves. Let the magnificant birds of prey eat the rats, mice and squirels!
Don't get me wrong...love the birds of prey, but leave my chickens alone!!!!

Well it's not like I'm tying up a chicken in the middle of a field and camping out with my camera or anything.........hmmm that gives me an idea. Just kidding. You have to understand where I'm coming from. I am facinated my animal behavior of all kinds. I will spend hours in front of a fish tank observing subtle body language between the fish that most people never notice. I put spiders together in bowls to watch how they display to each other. I keep and breed lizards, snakes, tarantulas, and can't take hikes with other people because I end up squating in the woods watching garder snakes "do it".
I enjoy the chickens because although domesticated it gives me a glimpe into how thier ancestors acted in the jungles of Southeast Asia, and maybe a stretch but sometimes I imagine them as tiny dinosaurs. My chickens walk the line between pets, livestock, and research subjects.
