Fertilized eggs for eating is actually a thing especially in health/whole food type stores. Some people claim fertilized eggs are healthier for you or something? I have no idea the science behind it, or lack there of for all I know.

The packaging literally will say fertilized eggs. I've seen some people do it with chicken, quail, and duck eggs. Generally your hatch rate will be VERY low. Like I saw a guy on YouTube who did it with quail eggs and I want to say he did 3 dozen eggs and only 3 hatched.

Breeds you'll get depend on the eggs, most of the time for chickens I see it as brown eggs and those I'd expect to likely be a Rhode Island Red or something along those lines. Something hardy, good egg laying and CHEAP to buy.
I've done some from my own hens, that had been in the fridge for an unspecified amount of time (at least 2 weeks) and got about 50%+ hatch rate. Also a batch I bought as table eggs that hatched at 80%. Those were local eggs and only in the fridge a day or two.

I'm currently doing some Trader Joe's fertile eggs. They were 11 and 18 days old when I got them. Today is day 14 for those. 0/12 developed in the older eggs. 8/12 developed in the fresher eggs. I have 1/12 remaining. I haven't decided if I'll try again. They were very slow to develop, lots of quitters. I read an article about the embryo metabolism being changed by the time spent at low temperatures. Especially a commercial fridge which is colder than my home one. If I ever try it again I'd want Trader Joe eggs under 7 days old.

I've been checking Julian dates on fancy eggs at various stores. There are some really old eggs out there. Definitely know how to check those julia dates and don't make assumptions on freshness.
Thank you both for your help!! Very interesting! I figured the hatch rates would be pretty low but didn’t realize they would be quite THAT low  :th I’m not sure if it’s be worth it. Seems sad. But does seem interesting.

I have relayed this story previously in other threads but I will give a quick recap: I hatched Frankie from a grocery store egg last June. I placed six in the incubator three developed, two went to lock down, she’s the only one that hatched.
Eggs came from Petaluma, California from a large egg producer that also sells fertilized eggs.I believe the brand was “Rock Island”.
Eggs were at least three weeks old I didn’t know about checking the Julian date back then. They did have to travel from container ship from California to Hawaii.
From posting info about her on BYC, I have come to the conclusion that she is half red sex link and half leghorn. She hatched from a medium brown egg but lays a very light tan egg herself. She started laying at 18 weeks and I also now have one of her chicks whose father is a Silkie. Hoping her daughter lays near as well as she does! She has not missed a day yet!😊

Oh wow she sounds amazing!! :love I’m sorry more didn’t hatch but seems you lucked out with her!! So interesting to me though that she’s a mix

It took a bit of detective work to figure it out, she hatched from a medium brown egg and the egg producer showed what looks like RSL on their website. These as you know are often used in production situations. I just assumed she would be a 2nd generation (RSL X RSL), but then she developed white earlobes and laid a much lighter egg then I expected. I believe the large egg producers get their special eggs like fertilized ones from different smaller farms as a secondary source. I guess I will never know for sure!
She is my smartest chicken and still likes to sit in my lap once in awhile for pats. Her daughter has her personality, so I had to keep her! 😊
I believe the Trader Joe's eggs are leghorn or leghorn crosses. "Happy Eggs" have a colored egg layer pack that some people have hatched from as well. These are Marans and Legbar crosses as far as I know.
Good luck!

You could hedge your bets. Talk to the dairy manager and see when they're having their fertile brand eggs delivered. Then just plan a hatch based around that.

Or search through all cartons on the shelf (what I did). Or ask an associate to look in the backstock for the freshest eggs possible.

I just noticed the Happy Eggs locally. They were $8/dz. Expensive table eggs but not bad for hatching eggs. I peeking in a carton... beautiful eggs!

Oh wow that’s so interesting!! I wonder if maybe they run them together or one got loose or something? Very cool though!! And I didn’t realize they would have those kinds of breeds  will have to look sometime.

That’s a great idea!!
