Reject Hatching Eggs - aka "The Undesirable Egg Experiment"

Pics
How in the world can you choose who to keep? So hard. I wish I could take some! Thanks so much for your excellent photos and the great information! You are a jewel. :hugs

It's SO hard! But I love hatching chicks so I only keep a handful to grow out every year. I had a waiting list before I ever set the eggs and I always honor my word so that helps to keep my flock under 10,000 :lau (lol, I have 12 mature hens).

After this hatch it could be both. You need a nap and a glass of wine, not necessarily in that order! Of course the real work now begins, taking care of chicks! :D

Got it! BYC "Doctor's" orders, lol.
Ooooh and we have a winery down the road called Butterducks Winery! It's a sign, I should drink wine and hatch duck eggs next. :D

This thread has been thoroughly enjoyable, informative and fun to follow. Your chicks are adorable and the photos are SO clear! (how did you take them? I see flash... how did you get it to not reflect off the walls?)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! ❤
I take A LOT of pictures to get the good ones. Angling the camera just right and zooming it so the reflection is predominantly glaring at the top of the plastic. Believe me, a lot of the pictures don't come out the way I want. lol

Oh yes, whenever I try to take pictures of my kids I shoot a ton and end up using maybe 10% 😁 What kind of camera are you using?

Nikon D3400, it's not the newest model but it has always worked well for me!
My trusty old Pentax K200D died on me recently and I’ve been thinking of getting a refurbished Nikon now. Can’t afford a new camera now thanks to the chickens :barnie:lol: Good to hear yours has been working well! I’ll look it up.

Yes, your photos are top notch. I take a lot of photos too with my $400 Nikon camera. I know that out of 20 only one or two are spectacular! You did such a good job. :love

How do you have people already lined up? Do you post it somewhere or are you already well established that it’s easy to get recommendations and people contacting you?

I've been doing this for a while now. I will often get requests and recommendations from happy customers. I go to great lengths to offer healthy chicks and some people recognize that and want to continue getting chicks from me, others just want cute fuzzy babies and they hear that I have them, lol.
I will occasionally post a picture of chicks that I hadn't made anyone aware that I was hatching. Last time they sold within 30 minutes! I don't know that it's typical though. Normally I keep my waiting list and I contact people in order.
