When you get a chance, get the book "That Quail, Robert". You will absolutely love it. (A couple in Cape Cod found a quail egg and took it home as a curiosity. It hatched and it never would leave. Incredible story!!!)

Hi there!

Congrats for rescuing the little guy!

I have raised several wild birds and I always soak dry dog food in water until mushy. They I break off small pieces and feed it to the bird. When they are that young it is hard to know whether or not they will pull through, but I'm hoping for you!

ALso, if the heatlamp isn't working out and you have a heating pad, you could try that. That's what I always use, set on low.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! I'd love to see him make it!

Well, I'm sorry to report that the baby is still refusing to eat. I'm not sure about trying to force-feed. *sigh* I just don't know what to do. Poor little birdie.

I don't have much experience with wild baby birds, but maybe you could try hand feeding the baby bird formula used for domisticated birds. Just pick a bit up along with a rubber spoon and try it out. I can't see why it wouldn't be beneficial if you could get it to ingest the formula.

Good luck!

IMO ( I was a certified wildlife rehaber for years) use at least canned dog/cat food. Rememebr that mom feed quite a wasy down the throat. Actually I used to give small bits of cat food with tweezers rather than dropper. I hope the little guy makes it for you.

The problem is that the baby wont open its mouth to eat anymore. It ate early this afternoon, but nothing since. It's so tiny that I'm afraid to try and force it's beak open. I'm sure I'd break the little guy in half.

He is starting to look dehydrated, but I read that you cannot give baby birds any kind of fluids because they do not have a flap to close off their windpipe and would therefore drown.

GAH! This is so frustrating!

Oh, and I did switch from bugs to canned cat food, fed with tweezers. I thought he would get more fluids from the canned food than from tiny bugs.

Oh gosh, I wish I had some idea's !!

could a drop of water on his beak be such a bad idea? Or perhaps something that would hold more water than the cat food...? Nice soggy cooked rice?

I did not read all the posts but, Have you been tapping on its beak softly with something to get it to initiate its feeding responce?
Hand feeding is done from right to left.

I have been tapping it's beak to initiate feeding, however he hasn't ever waited for the tap - he's up and begging the minute he hears us peep at him.
We haven't been getting up in the night to feed him, but he has been eager for food each and every time it's been offered until this afternoon.

As of yet, still no progress.
