I was visiting my mother in law yesterday and she was telling me about a duck in her neighborhood that was living in horrible conditions and that she was planning on trying to get the duck. She asked if I would be willing to take it and let it stay with my flock for at least the winter. I told her of course, I would help out in any way I can. So now we're planning to get the poor duck out of there anyway we can.
Apparently he's being held in the corner of a residential yard, in a 2.5'x2.5' fenced in pen thingy. She says there were two of them in there, but one if gone. The remaining duck has nothing but a pan of water that is rarely full or clean. She has never seen food in the pen. There is no shelter or bedding either. He just walks in a little circle, ALL day long. Of course, I was appalled to hear it and the local animal control will not even come out. She's tried. So she is going to approach them and see if they will sell or surrender the animal. If all else fails, I believe she's ready to steal him.
So assuming we can rescue the poor thing, what should I do? Anyone familiar with rescuing ducks, or can tell me what I should look for in regards to his health, and what's the quarantine procedure when introducing a duck from these conditions to your regular flock?
Also what about his emotional well being? How do I not overwhelm him, and whats the best way to helping him adjust to a new life??
And I am not sure breed yet, but I hear he's grey and blue, so I am wondering about like a Swede, or WH maybe? Will post pics if we get him and when.
Thanks in advance!!!
