I was visiting my mother in law yesterday and she was telling me about a duck in her neighborhood that was living in horrible conditions and that she was planning on trying to get the duck. She asked if I would be willing to take it and let it stay with my flock for at least the winter. I told her of course, I would help out in any way I can. So now we're planning to get the poor duck out of there anyway we can.

Apparently he's being held in the corner of a residential yard, in a 2.5'x2.5' fenced in pen thingy. She says there were two of them in there, but one if gone. The remaining duck has nothing but a pan of water that is rarely full or clean. She has never seen food in the pen. There is no shelter or bedding either. He just walks in a little circle, ALL day long. Of course, I was appalled to hear it and the local animal control will not even come out. She's tried. So she is going to approach them and see if they will sell or surrender the animal. If all else fails, I believe she's ready to steal him.

So assuming we can rescue the poor thing, what should I do? Anyone familiar with rescuing ducks, or can tell me what I should look for in regards to his health, and what's the quarantine procedure when introducing a duck from these conditions to your regular flock?

Also what about his emotional well being? How do I not overwhelm him, and whats the best way to helping him adjust to a new life??

And I am not sure breed yet, but I hear he's grey and blue, so I am wondering about like a Swede, or WH maybe? Will post pics if we get him and when.

Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like he is a blue swede. I guess as far as his health, make sure he doesn't have mites, gunk in eyes or nostrils, or any evidence of diarrhea. Beyond that, I'm not sure. As for not overwhelming him upon introduction, you could try keeping him penned with just a couple of your ducks (after quarantine, of course) for about a week, and then putting them all with the other ducks. I think he's just going to be so happy not to be alone and bored any more! Keep updates coming!

Thanks for the response! I have a very small backyard flock of three ducks lol and luckily my odd three are very laid back, calm ducks. Other than their night pen, my free range all day on three acres, so he'll have more freedom than it sounds like he's ever had. We think he's an easter duck, as they got the two ducklings in April.

Yeah, we were thinking Blue Swede as well, but seeing him should confirm. We have one black swede already.

Well thanks for the help! I have never rescued before and although Im looking forward to it, I am a bit nervous. Will def. keep you guys posted!

Just don't get caught snatching it. My sister in law snatched a dog in filthy abandoned living condition. Dog is fine now and I bet the owner didn't even notice. I would quarantine the duck for 30 days in a way that it can see your ducks. Make sure it is clean and healthy before letting loose with your gang. I would also give the best food, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes to help it along. I think it will be fine.

Thanks! What do you guys use for the electrolytes?

I have a variety of food, from layer to game bird, brewers yeast, oyster shells... am I missing anything?

And Secretquail, she is planning on offering them some money for the duck, I think she was thinking about 20? And if she has no luck, and the conditions do not improve she is going to wait a week and then go snatch him while they're gone one day. I don't advocate theft, but really, in some situations it's the right thing to do.

If it were me seeing that duck in there under those circumstances, I would DEFINITELY take it. No animal should live like that. Idiots.
Please be sure to let us know what happens. Good luck to you all. I wish more people were like you and your family.

They will probably gladly sell her the duck-----especially since winter is coming! They probably have been tired of taking care of it-----as little as they've been doing-----but didn't know how to go about finding it a new home. Don't forget the treats for the duck-----you know, peas, peas, peas (mine also love tomatoes, zuchini, and cucmbers)!!

That's what I was hoping. She asked how she should go about asking for the duck, and I said the same thing you did, that if she offered them money, they'd probably jump on it. Unless they are raising him for the holiday feast, but if that's the case you'd think they would actually FEED him more than rarely.

As for treats, my ducks are weird, they ONLY like peas if I put them in their water lol. They like bobbing for them.

They LOVE eggs, and watermelon.
