Rescuing goose from park. I would love some advice!

I rescued a chinese goose from a retention pond this past spring. I used a dog cage with about 25 ft. of 3' plastic fencing on each side and it worked really well. Two people "herded" the goose into the funnel (it took a couple of tries to get her into the funnel), but surprisingly she just walked right back into the kennel. I was a little worried she might try to fly over the kennel, but she didn't. This was also done right before dusk, so I think she was having a hard time seeing which probably helped! (sorry for the not so great drawing, we failed to take pics of our setup)
Good luck!

I remember that so well. Do you ever hear anything about her? and wow that is a great drawing.

I don't have fencing of any sort that would work. I do have a large fishing net on a long pole. The goose stays just out of reach though. I can get the net to the gooses back, but he is too fast for me. I tried to have my seven year old to help me today. He just didn't get the concept. It isn't looking good.

what you need is more support, so you can surround the goose, and herd him where you want him to go, like a human fence. you'll have to lure him away from the water though or you don't have a chance, go early and just sit and feed him then after a while have others come then try to get him. he's going to be very leary now since he knows your up to something. Don't give up though. The net my work if you can get enough people to surround like a fence.

Is the playground fenced at all? My guys are pretty much free range -- no fences or pens really. BUT when I have to catch one I hem it in a corner of the back yard. Walking slowly is better than chaos. A helper really helps.

That diagram funnel idea is GREAT as well. I bet even plastic orange construction netting will work. Geese are pretty much big wimps and it doesn't take too much to trick them.

Good luck and PLEASE keep trying. That goose will be a pile of feathers in the road if its left to his own defenses.

The park is big and open. There aren't any fences to corner him in. I sat a while four feet from him playing a YouTube video of Toulouse geese for him to listen too. He seemed intrigued. At the same time I think the geese in the video where telling the person to go away, so I'm not sure that was the right message to send, LOL! Does anyone know of a video or sound clip of a mating call or something he might respond to better? I thought maybe that and a mirror might get him a little closer and stay a little longer.

you can pick up the white step in posts at Lowes and some plastic style fencing to attach with zip ties to make a funnel type area to catch the goose in, or walk it into a dog kennel with. SLOW movements is key when herding a goose and even more so one who has been on its own in park. Let them see what you want of them as you slowly move and they can usually work it out and stay fairly calm.

You know it may take you a few days but if you can gain his trust with just sitting with him offering him some kind of treats corn, bread etc. even some of your feed you give to your ducks, he probably hasn't had a decent meal in a while, just sitting quietly with him once you get hi m close enough maybe working with a couple more people you may just be able to get him. start by sitting quietly with him ,then gradually kneeling, then standing so you all have a better chance of catching him. of course fencing would be alot easier so you could walk him in. the fence posts Celtic is talking about are around 2.64 here. each

I was going to suggest something similar....sometimes my geese get too comfortable running up for their bucket of oats. After 2 or 3 days (sometimes more and sometimes it never works), You can grab the goose when he sticks his head in the bucket. Stoop down and talk to him if you can while he's eating so it gets used to you being there.

Hunger is your friend here. I don't recommend corn as a daily meal, but dang mine are crack addicts for it. If he gets used to seeing you with something he loves, well geese are real easy to trick. But don't miss....you'll have to start all over gaining trust. And I'm not sure how long you intend on hanging out in the park.

Surely someone knows somebody near this lady that can help her and mostly this poor goose???

Maybe put a post on your state thread asking if anyone is in your vicinity that could help you catch the goose. Right now things that would really work in your advantage as far as food is corn and bread because they really love both, then after you get it home don't feed it anymore. But I'll be honest and tell on myself my ducks/geese get some corn daily. Not alot but they love it so.

I will try some bread. I'm not sure it will work. The city has a big metal gravity feeder that provides an endless amount of cracked corn for the ducks.
